Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 1: A Double Dose of Change and Growth (Recap & Review)

The wait is over! Abbott Elementary is back for season 3, kicking things off with a two-part premiere titled "Career Day." This episode throws us right into the thick of things, with some major changes for our favorite teachers and a healthy dose of humor along the way.

Janine's New Gig

The biggest surprise? Janine isn't teaching at Abbott anymore. We learn through a flashback that she's taken a job with the school district, specifically the Robeson Fellowship program. This new role allows her to advocate for positive change across the district, something Janine is clearly passionate about. However, the decision wasn't easy. We see her struggle with leaving her students behind and the familiar comfort of the classroom.

There's a heartwarming aspect to this transition. Janine, who often craves validation, finally receives some well-deserved recognition from the district. This, coupled with Barbara's surprising endorsement of the new program, ultimately convinces Janine to take the leap.

Welcome (and Farewell) to the New Normal

Meanwhile, back at Abbott, things are… different. Ava, our ever-enthusiastic principal, has undergone a personality shift. Inspired by summer studies, she's become a stickler for the rules, implementing new protocols that drive everyone a little crazy. The teachers, in classic Abbott fashion, band together to try and bring the "old Ava" back. Barbara's solution? A strategically placed blast of Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up" in the gym – a hilarious moment that highlights both Ava's rigidity and Barbara's willingness to embrace new approaches.

Love on the Rocks

The episode also explores some developments in the teachers' personal lives. Melissa is clearly not interested in remarrying, despite Gary's persistent (and ultimately unsuccessful) attempt at a public proposal with the help of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. This unexpected cameo adds a touch of excitement, but the outcome is bittersweet. Gary and Melissa ultimately break up, leaving us to wonder if they could have found a way to be together without rushing into marriage.

Janine and Gregory: A Friendship Redefined

The elephant in the room throughout the episode is Janine and Gregory's relationship. We haven't seen their dynamic since the season 2 finale, leaving us on edge. Thankfully, the writers deliver a much-needed moment of vulnerability between them. They finally clear the air about Janine's lingering feelings, and Gregory gently but firmly establishes his desire for friendship. While their romantic future remains unclear, it's refreshing to see them acknowledge the tension and recommit to their strong friendship.

Looking Ahead

This premiere episode sets the stage for a season filled with questions. Will Janine stay at the district, or will she return to Abbott and her classroom? Can Janine and Gregory truly move forward as friends? These are just some of the things we'll be looking out for as the season progresses.

Overall, "Career Day Part 1" is a satisfying start to season 3. It juggles humor, character development, and a healthy dose of change, leaving us excited to see what's next for Abbott's dedicated educators.
