A Creepy Lullaby and a Glimmer of Hope?
Episode 3 of American Horror Story: Delicate, titled "When The Bough Breaks," takes us on a rollercoaster ride through Anna's increasingly fragmented reality. The episode is a masterclass in building suspense and blurring the lines between sanity and delusion.
We begin with a heart-wrenching dream sequence. Anna imagines her baby boy frolicking in a meadow, only to see him vanish into thin air. This haunting image foreshadows the emotional turmoil and grief she's grappling with after the miscarriage.

Back in the Hamptons, tensions rise as Anna grapples with Dex's lack of support. Her suspicions about "them" – the unseen force manipulating her life – intensify. Is it the unsettling Ms. Preecher, who reappears like a phantom in the woods? Dr. Hill, with his futuristic medical practices? Or even Sonia, Dex's deceased wife's doppelganger who shows up unexpectedly?
The episode cleverly utilizes repetitive imagery to heighten the sense of unease. The reappearance of a "Summer Day" voodoo doll with pins in its abdomen mirrors the one found earlier, emphasizing the ongoing threat and raising questions about its source.
A glimmer of normalcy arrives in the form of Siobhan, Anna's sharp-tongued publicist. While her cucumber-slicing skills remain questionable and her beach wardrobe debatable, Siobhan offers a dose of reality amidst the chaos. She reminds Anna (and the audience) that "nobody's ready for anything," highlighting the universal struggles of fame, misfortune, and navigating life's challenges.
However, the normalcy is fleeting. While strolling on the beach, Anna spots two masked women dressed in black, each holding a leashed goat. Are these demonic figures figments of her traumatized psyche, or are they truly sinister forces lurking in the shadows?
The episode then plunges us back into the rabbit hole. Anna discovers a hidden basement filled with Thalia's old baby items. Here, the disturbing nursery rhyme "Rockabye Baby" plays, a recurring motif linked to both Preecher and the house manager, Nicolette.
Anna's descent into paranoia escalates. A hallucination leads her to a candlelit crawl space and a macabre hallway lined with jars containing preserved baby body parts, an unsettling callback to "Murder House."
The episode climaxes with Anna being restrained and injected by the horned women. However, upon waking up, she's back in the basement, surrounded by baby paraphernalia. This constant questioning of reality keeps the audience on edge.
Despite the doctor's reassurance that her baby movement is a hallucination, Anna remains convinced. This delusion is further fueled by a handsy store clerk confirming her feeling "the kicking."
The episode ends with a spark of hope amidst the terror. Preecher, visible to both Anna and Kamal, warns her about Sonia and Dex. Anna, however, fixates solely on the confirmation of a living baby within her. She reaches out to the mysterious hacker, possibly Preecher herself, seeking an alliance against "them."
"When The Bough Breaks" masterfully utilizes horror tropes to create a disturbing atmosphere. The audience remains unsure of what to believe as the lines between reality and delusion blur. The episode concludes with a sense of unease, leaving us with burning questions: Who can Anna trust? Who are "them"? And is the baby truly alive, or a twisted manifestation of Anna's fractured mental state? We can't wait to see how this unsettling narrative unfolds in the upcoming episodes.
