This relapse in judgment leads Ruzek to a dangerous underground poker game, a place where undercover work and personal vices become dangerously blurred. Using an alias from his past life, Ruzek gets entangled with a criminal informant, Zaco. The game takes a violent turn, with Ruzek engaging in a shootout with masked gunmen.

Despite clear orders from Voight to leave the scene, Ruzek's impulsiveness gets the better of him. He contacts Voight, who attempts to contain the situation by taking over the case and hiding Ruzek's involvement. However, Ruzek's actions leave a trail of evidence, attracting the attention of Internal Affairs.

Meanwhile, tension builds between Ruzek and Burgess. Burgess senses something is amiss when Voight takes over the case, and her suspicions are confirmed when Internal Affairs arrives. Ruzek's attempt to downplay his involvement further strains their relationship.

Determined to prove himself, Ruzek disobeys Voight's orders and continues his own investigation. He seeks out Zaco for information, eventually piecing together the robbery as an inside job. This reckless pursuit leads him to the scene of another crime, where he finds one of the robbery suspects dying. The dying man implicates the poker game organizer, Wes Arbin, as the mastermind behind the robbery.

However, Ruzek's inability to record the confession and his unauthorized presence at the crime scene create further complications. Voight tries to shield Ruzek, but the rest of the team eventually discovers his involvement.

To further complicate matters, Voight breaks one of Ruzek's promises by utilizing Zaco as a confidential informant. In exchange for his cooperation, Zaco demands better housing for his sister, dropped drug charges, and a significant financial incentive. With Zaco threatening to expose Ruzek, Burgess is forced to make a difficult decision – she agrees to Zaco's demands.

Despite wearing a wire during a meeting with Wes, the operation goes awry. Wes, suspecting Zaco, manages to escape police surveillance. Ruzek, determined to protect Zaco, tracks him down before Wes can exact revenge. A chase and shootout ensue, resulting in Wes' death and Zaco sustaining fatal injuries.

In a surprising turn of events, Ruzek learns that he has passed his reinstatement exam. However, the episode ends on a somber note as Zaco succumbs to his injuries.

"Retread" explores the dangers of clinging to the past and the consequences of impulsive behavior. It highlights the tightrope walk Ruzek navigates as he grapples with his physical and emotional limitations.
