Prime Video's "My Lady Jane" throws us into a wildly reimagined 16th century
England, where herbal remedies, scheming nobles, and a dash of the fantastical
collide. Episode 1 sets the stage for a whirlwind adventure, introducing us to a
fiercely independent Jane Grey and the political machinations that will send her
life spiraling.
We meet Jane not in a stuffy library, but tending to her friend's, ahem, "medical" needs. Forget the demure maiden stereotype – this Jane is a woman of science and sass, determined to carve her own path. Unfortunately, her ambitions clash with the harsh reality of Tudor society, where women are pawns in a game of power. Enter the lecherous Duke of Leicester, her guardian, and the news of a forced marriage to secure her family's future.

Undeterred, Jane hatches an escape plan with her trusty maid, Susannah. However, the episode throws its first curveball – Susannah reveals herself as an Ethian, a human capable of shapeshifting, adding a fantastical layer to the historical backdrop. This twist not only introduces a potential new threat but also serves as a metaphor for the rigid societal structures Jane seeks to break free from.
Captured and chastised, Jane's spirit remains unbroken. We see glimpses of the political turmoil brewing – the King's failing health, the whispers of a "creeping Ethian menace," and the power struggle between advisors pushing their preferred heir. Jane, with her quick wit and knowledge of herbs (much to the chagrin of her book-burning mother) inadvertently finds herself drawn into the center of it all.
Desperate to avoid a life of domesticity, Jane seeks an audience with the ailing King Edward. While unable to help her directly, their meeting reveals another surprise – Edward is gay, further challenging the expectations of the era. The episode then throws a series of dizzying twists: a potential love interest for Jane who turns out to be an Ethian fugitive, a shocking revelation about the King's true illness, and a cliffhanger ending that leaves us wanting more.
"My Lady Jane" doesn't shy away from historical references, weaving in figures like Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn while twisting them to fit its fantastical narrative. The dialogue is peppered with anachronistic humor ("roast dolphin" anyone?), adding to the show's lighthearted tone. With its blend of history, fantasy, and sharp wit, Episode 1 promises a wildly entertaining season, leaving us eager to see how Jane navigates this perilous and unexpected world.
