Slow Horses Season 2's second episode, “From Upshott With Love,” shifts gears
from the breakneck pace of the premiere. While it may lack the immediate thrill
of its predecessor, it's a crucial installment in building the intricate web of
the season's overarching plot.
The episode opens with a focus on identifying the mysterious “big bald bull” responsible for Richard Bough's demise. Lamb, ever resourceful, infiltrates a language school to confront a suspected former KGB agent, Nikolai. Through a mix of intimidation and charm, Lamb coerces a confession from Nikolai, revealing the man's name as Andrei Chernitsky.
The episode then turns its attention to tracking down Chernitsky. River, with his knack for unconventional methods, poses as a concerned nephew seeking a lost uncle. Through a cab driver, he manages to pinpoint the airfield where Chernitsky was dropped off. However, their victory is short-lived as they realize Chernitsky is likely several steps ahead, having anticipated such a pursuit.
While the plot may seem to slow down compared to the explosive opener, “From Upshott With Love” excels in deepening the characters and their relationships. The dynamic between Lamb and River continues to evolve, with Lamb recognizing River's potential while maintaining his characteristically gruff exterior. Shirley, the newest addition to Slough House, further establishes herself as a valuable asset with her quick thinking and resourcefulness.
The episode also highlights the ongoing tension between Slough House and Regents Park. Lamb's plea for resources to investigate the “cicada” program is met with skepticism by Diana Taverner, emphasizing the deep-rooted rivalry between the two factions.
However, the episode isn't without its flaws. Min's continued incompetence is frustrating, as his reckless pursuit of Pushkin's security team puts the entire operation at risk. His actions serve as a stark contrast to the intelligence and resourcefulness displayed by other members of the team.
Despite its slower pace, “From Upshott With Love” is essential in laying the groundwork for the season's overarching narrative. The episode introduces new challenges and complexities, while also deepening our understanding of the characters and their motivations.
