"The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2: Golf Scene Changes & Joel’s Fate"

1.As expected, in the face of the most controversial scene in the original game, the second episode has made drastic adaptations to the plot, modifying some of the previously criticized points. The biggest difference is that in the game, the person who went out on patrol with Joel was Tommy, but in the series, it was changed to Tina.

In the game, Tommy and Joel took the initiative to introduce themselves to Abby's group, which exposed their identities. This plot caused huge controversy at that time. Many people questioned that it was very unwise for the Joel brothers to reveal their identities when they had made countless enemies outside. However, the drama version changed it to Tina accidentally shouting out Joel's name, which is obviously more reasonable.

2.The plot of Jesse and Ellie going out on patrol is original to the drama version.

In the game, it was Tina who went out on patrol with Ellie, and it was the two of them who found Eugene's cabin. Later, Jesse found them and said that Joel and Tommy had not returned after their patrol, so Ellie went out to look for Joel.

3.The defense battle of Jackson Town is an original plot of the series, explaining where Tommy was that day. This part is not in the original work. In the original, Abby encountered a group of infected people in the snow mountain. However, it has to be said that this part was really shot with great momentum, and the old actor bloater also returned...

4.Abby's dialogue with another version of herself in the dream where her father was killed is an original plot of the series. In the game, this part was just Abby recalling the events of that day in a nightmare, and it appeared in Abby's chapter in the middle and later stages.

The adaptation of the series makes the audience more intuitively feel the huge impact of this incident on Abby's mind, trying to make everyone empathize with Abby's motivation.

5.The number of members in Abby's team in the game is obviously smaller.

In the second episode, only Owen, Mel, Manny and Nora came to Jackson with Abby. But in the game, there were three other team members with Abby. One of them, named Jordan, was scratched in the face by the resisting Ellie in the game and kicked Ellie unconscious. But in the series, all these scenes were added to Manny, and the subsequent plots related to Manny are estimated to be greatly changed.

6.Finally, we come to the famous golf course scene. Like the series, this plot in the game also happened very early (about an hour and a half into the game process). The series also made changes to this plot that caused a sensation at that time.

The most important adaptation is that the series has Abby give a long monologue before taking action, explaining her hatred for Joel. In the game, Joel directly interrupted Abby's monologue and said, "Cut the crap and do it."

As for Joel's cause of death, in the game, he was completely beaten to death by Abby with a golf club bit by bit. Considering that the series version has modified Abby's figure, it was changed to her stabbing Joel to death with a broken golf club.

The series also added plots for Joel when he was dying. In the game, he almost died on the spot, and then Ellie fainted until Tina sent her back to Jackson. In the series, it was changed that Joel tried to reach out to Ellie at the last moment, and finally Ellie struggled to climb onto Joel and gave him a final hug.

7.Finally, there is an easter egg from the game. The BGM "Through the Valley" at the end of this episode first appeared in the trailer of the second game in 2016, sung by Ellie while playing the guitar. The crew also invited Ashley Johnson, the voice actor of Ellie, to re-interpret this song, and the name of the song is also the title of this episode.
