Those About to Die: Trust None - A Rollercoaster of Intrigue and Action

Those About to Die continues to deliver a mix of spectacle and intrigue in its second episode, "Trust None." While the core plot involving Tenax, Scorpus, and the political machinations of Rome remains the central focus, the episode introduces several new characters and subplots that expand the world of the series.

The episode deepens our understanding of the complex relationships within the Roman elite. Antonia, Scorpus's lover and a shareholder in the Blue faction, emerges as a formidable opponent to Tenax's ambitions. Her ruthless poisoning of the Andalusian horses demonstrates her willingness to play dirty to protect her interests. The dynamic between Antonia and Tenax is filled with tension and sexual chemistry, making their interactions compelling to watch.

Meanwhile, the introduction of the Andalusian and Numidian families adds a layer of human interest to the story. The plight of the enslaved Numidian children is heartbreaking, and their reunion with their mother is a poignant moment. Sara Martins delivers a powerful performance as Cala, a mother desperate to protect her children. While the plotline involving the Numidian family is somewhat predictable, it serves as a reminder of the human cost of Rome's empire.

The episode also introduces the world of gladiatorial combat, with Kwame's unexpected turn as a fighter. His unlikely alliance with the gentle giant Viggo provides a glimmer of hope amidst the brutality of the arena. The CGI albino lion adds a touch of spectacle, but its role in the story remains to be seen.

While the episode delivers on action and intrigue, it suffers from some pacing issues. The plotlines involving the Andalusian and Numidian families feel somewhat disconnected from the main narrative, and their stories could have been developed more fully. Additionally, the character of Domitian, while intriguing, is still somewhat underdeveloped.

Despite these shortcomings, "Trust None" is an entertaining episode that builds upon the foundation laid in the premiere. The series continues to explore the dark underbelly of Roman society, revealing the corruption, violence, and power struggles that define the era. With the stage now set, the upcoming episodes promise to deliver even more thrilling and complex storytelling.
