"Seven Years Later," the aptly titled first episode of Vikings: Valhalla's
final season, throws us right back into the action with a significant time jump.
We find our beloved characters vastly changed by the passage of time, each
grappling with new challenges and ambitions.

Harald and Leif: Warriors for Hire
The episode wastes no time delivering the series' signature epic battles. We find Harald and Leif in Sicily, embroiled in the Byzantine siege of Syracuse. Six months into the campaign, the Emperor's frustration with the slow progress mounts. This presents an opportunity for Harald, who offers his Viking warriors' expertise in exchange for a share of the spoils. His sights are set on returning to Norway and reclaiming his throne, and the riches of Syracuse would significantly bolster his cause.
However, Harald faces opposition from George Maniakes, the Emperor's fiercely distrustful guard captain. Maniakes despises Harald and believes him to be untrustworthy. Further complicating matters is his bloodlust for a swift victory, clashing with Harald's more strategic approach.
Harald and Leif devise a daring plan: a complex siege weapon utilizing an explosion to breach the castle walls. The episode ends on a thrilling note as their warriors clash with the defending Saracen army in the aftermath of the successful breach. This opening sequence establishes the season's focus on action and highlights the evolution of Harald and Leif. Harald remains fixated on his legacy, while Leif demonstrates a thirst for knowledge, particularly interested in the library hidden within the besieged city.
King Canute Bends the Knee (Slightly)
Meanwhile, King Canute struggles with the constraints of religious authority. His violent and aggressive methods clash with the Pope's emissary, who refuses him an audience with the Holy See. Canute desires the Pope's blessing to solidify his rule, but the price is steep: building 300 churches in England and naming an heir.
Enter Godwin, Canute's ever-resourceful advisor. He proposes a diplomatic solution, offering riches in exchange for the Pope's favor. This reluctantly gains Canute's begrudging approval. However, Queen Emma isn't entirely on board, disapproving of Godwin's approach and hinting at alternative tactics.
This storyline underscores a fascinating shift for Canute. A man accustomed to brute force must now navigate the complexities of religious power structures. It's a compelling situation that showcases his struggle to temper his violent tendencies for political gain.
Freydis: A Warrior Queen Finds Love
Freydis, a character who garnered much respect in season 2, continues to impress. She has established herself as a capable leader, securing her own domain and fiercely defending her people's Pagan beliefs. While she inquires about Harald, a sense of peace and self-reliance permeates her life in Jomsborg.
A new arrival, Stigr, piques Freydis's interest. This skilled healer and martial arts expert impresses her with his knowledge of herbs and defensive prowess. Their initial encounter involves a playful sparring match, which ends with Freydis acknowledging Stigr's superior skills. Their bond deepens when Stigr reveals his Jomsviking heritage, further earning Freydis's respect.
By episode's end, Freydis entrusts Stigr with the task of training her son, Harald II, in combat. The episode also hints at a blossoming romance between the two, culminating in a night of passion.
A Solid Foundation for the Final Chapter
Vikings: Valhalla's season 3 premiere delivers a satisfying opening act. The time jump effectively introduces the characters' new circumstances and sets the stage for the final chapter's conflicts and resolutions. While each storyline holds promise, Freydis's journey appears to be the most intriguing. Her position as a warrior queen constantly under threat of invasion adds a layer of suspense to her narrative.
Overall, this episode is a solid foundation for the final season, packed with action, political intrigue, and the promise of romantic entanglements. It effectively reintroduces our favorite characters and leaves viewers eager to see how their destinies unfold.
