A Gentleman in Moscow Season 1 Episode 5: An Arrival - Embracing an Unexpected Role

In the fifth episode of A Gentleman in Moscow's first season, titled "An Arrival," Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) finds himself in the unexpected role of surrogate parent to Nina's daughter, Sofia (Billie Gadsdon). The episode opens with Rostov standing bewildered in the hotel lobby with Sofia, as her mother, Nina (Leah Balmforth), has left in search of her husband, leaving Rostov to care for the young girl.

Rostov's initial attempts to care for Sofia are met with a series of comedic and heartwarming challenges. Sofia's presence in the hotel quickly becomes common knowledge, and not everyone is thrilled by it. Leplevsky (John Heffernan), now the deputy manager, is particularly unamused and seeks to place Sofia in a party-run orphanage. However, Rostov pleads for time to find a better solution, and the hotel manager Halecki (Rob Jarvis) agrees to give him a month.

As Rostov navigates the trials of surrogate parenthood, he discovers a note from Anna (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) inviting him to her room. The ensuing encounter is a delightful mix-up, as Rostov walks in on Anna's assistant Olga (Anastasia Hille) in the tub, engaged in her own secret affair with the concierge Vasily (Daniel Cerqueira). When Anna arrives, she informs Rostov of her changed plans and offers some advice on hair brushing, a task Rostov is clearly struggling with.

Rostov's attempts to read a book are continually thwarted by Sofia's presence, leading to a game of hide-and-seek that highlights the growing bond between them. Sofia's intelligence and wit are on full display when she outsmarts Rostov in their game, leaving him impressed and a little humbled.

The episode also explores the dynamics of Rostov's relationship with Anna, as he seeks her help in keeping Sofia at the hotel. Anna's own struggles are highlighted when she loses a film role to a rising actress, Mila (Ines Pires Tavares), and is faced with the reality of her changing status in the film industry. Her interaction with Mila is a masterclass in grace and resilience, as she offers the younger actress advice on navigating the industry while coming to terms with her own career's trajectory.

In a pivotal moment, Anna asks Rostov for a favor, which leads to a heart-wrenching scene where Rostov must decide whether to risk his own safety for the sake of Sofia. The tension builds as Leplevsky, determined to have Sofia removed, goes above Halecki's head, setting a deadline for her departure.

Rostov's desperation leads him to Anna once more, and in a poignant exchange, Anna acknowledges that while Rostov may not be able to provide Sofia with a traditional family, he offers something far more valuable: love. In a twist of fate, Anna's favor to Rostov involves Nachevko (Jason Forbes), whose support as a ranking party member allows Sofia to remain at the hotel, despite Leplevsky's protests.

The episode concludes with Rostov tucking Sofia into bed, where she asks if her mother will return. For the first time, Rostov admits his uncertainty but promises to look after her indefinitely. The narrator, an older Sofia, reveals the tragic fate of Nina, who disappeared without a trace, a victim of the Soviet regime's countless nameless individuals.

"An Arrival" is a powerful exploration of the unexpected bonds that form in the most unlikely of circumstances. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love and compassion in the face of adversity. Rostov's journey from a man of privilege to a reluctant yet devoted guardian is both heartrending and inspiring, a reminder that sometimes, the most significant arrivals in our lives are the ones we never saw coming.
