A Virtuous Business Season 1 Episode 9: A Tangled Web of Love and Guilt

In the ninth episode of "A Virtuous Business," the narrative delves deeper into the complexities of love, guilt, and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. The episode opens with a tender moment between Do-hyeon and Jeong-suk, which is abruptly interrupted by a passing drunkard. This encounter leaves Do-hyeon flustered, leading him to label Jeong-suk as a "forever friend," inadvertently diffusing the romantic tension that had been building between them. Despite the awkwardness, there's an undeniable sense of connection that lingers as they part ways, setting the stage for the emotional rollercoaster that is Episode 9.

The episode then shifts its focus to the aftermath of Jong-seon and Du-seok's criminal escapade. The duo, having robbed a jewelry store, find themselves in a dire situation as they accidentally hit someone while fleeing the scene. Jong-seon, shaken by the gravity of their actions, steps out to check on the victim, only to realize the severity of the situation. Overwhelmed by guilt, he uses a payphone to report the accident to the police before rushing off. The victim, tragically, is revealed to be Geum-hui's husband, Won-bong, who was out purchasing an anniversary gift for his wife. Won-bong is rushed to the hospital for surgery, which thankfully goes well. Dae-geun, relieved and committed to helping, promises to look after the pharmacy until Won-bong recovers.

As a detective, Do-hyeon quickly connects the dots between the hit-and-run and the jewelry store heist. Visiting the hospital, he speaks with Geum-hui, who is deeply shaken by her husband's accident. Won-bong's recovery begins, but he has little information for Do-hyeon beyond hearing two people arguing at the scene. This revelation adds another layer to the investigation, as Do-hyeon's pursuit of the truth becomes more personal and urgent.

The tension between Do-hyeon and Jeong-suk escalates as Do-hyeon finally admits his growing feelings for her, appreciating her dedication and resilience. Jeong-suk, however, feels conflicted. She's unsure of her emotions and, for now, chooses to focus on her responsibilities as a mother and her recent promotion. This decision adds a layer of complexity to their relationship, as they navigate the delicate balance between personal feelings and professional responsibilities.

On the other side of town, Jong-seon is drowning in guilt over the accident. His partner, Yeong-bok, senses something is wrong, especially after discovering that it was Geum-hui's husband who was hit. When she confronts Jong-seon, he confesses everything. Though horrified, Yeong-bok persuades him not to turn himself in, reminding him of the vow he made to prioritize their children above all else. Despite her words, it's evident she's conflicted and unsure if she can keep this secret for long.

As Do-hyeon continues his investigation, he finds a smudged fingerprint in the phone booth and retrieves a recording of the 119 call, hoping it might reveal the culprit's voice. During a shared meal with friends, Yeong-bok struggles to keep her composure, while everyone else reminisces about their friendship and expresses hope for a lasting bond.

Jeong-suk, inspired by Ju-ri's casual relationship with Dae-geun, decides to reach out to Do-hyeon. She invites him to meet the next day, and he eagerly prepares for the date, showing up in a sharp suit, much to the amusement of his colleagues. Their date takes them to a theme park, where the two enjoy an unexpectedly playful day. Jeong-suk, who hasn't laughed like this in a long time, is delighted by the spontaneous adventure, even joining Do-hyeon in running for the bus—a carefree moment she hadn't anticipated but thoroughly enjoys.

That night, Yeong-bok visits Geum-hui at the hospital. This emotional meeting triggers a series of revelations, and soon Do-hyeon receives a call on his date, informing him that the person responsible for the hit-and-run has turned themselves in. The confession stirs a wave of emotions. Geum-hui, feeling betrayed and devastated, admits her regrets and decides it's best for everyone involved to never see each other again.
