The second season of AMC's Dark Winds kicks off with an adrenaline-pumping
premiere that dives straight back into the heart of the Navajo Nation's
mysteries. Episode 1, titled "Na'niłkaadii," sets the stage for a season that
promises to be just as gripping as its predecessor.
The episode begins with a tense and action-packed sequence as Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Sergeant Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) approach a trailer on the reservation, intending to apprehend a suspect. The urgency is heightened when they realize the trailer is empty, except for a chilling collection of items that hint at the suspect's dangerous nature. Just as they start to investigate, the suspect launches a surprise attack, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats as they wonder if our protagonists will emerge unscathed.
In a dramatic flashback, we learn that six days prior, a series of events unfolded that would lead to the current crisis. Emma Leaphorn (Julia Jones), Joe's wife, encounters a man with a bizarre story of an alien-like goat and a mysterious injury. Meanwhile, Emerson Charley (Adam Beach), a man with terminal cancer, becomes the victim of a car explosion that also injures Emma. The incident, which initially appears to be an accident, is revealed to be a murder when Joe discovers a timer spring in the wreckage.
As the investigation deepens, Joe looks into Emerson's family history, particularly his brother Dillon, who was involved with a cult known as the "People of Darkness." The cult, once funded by the wealthy businessman B. J. Vines (Walton Goggins), has a dark history that seems to be intertwined with the current case. Dillon's own death in a car accident raises suspicions about B. J. Vines' possible involvement.
The episode also introduces us to the season's main antagonist, Colton Wolf (Kirk Acevedo), a psychopathic killer whose actions are both brutal and enigmatic. His connection to the explosion and his search for a woman named Linda add layers of complexity to the case.
In a subplot, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), now working as a private investigator, is hired by Rosemary Vines (Jeri Ryan) to recover a stolen box. The case leads him to Tomas Charley (Dennis Boutsikaris), Emerson's son, who believes that B. J. Vines is a witch responsible for his father's illness. The box, it turns out, is a key to breaking the supposed curse.
The episode concludes with a shocking twist as Jim and Joe, while searching for the box, are attacked by Colton. In the ensuing firefight, Jim is injured, and Joe's car is destroyed, leaving them stranded in the desert. The final scene leaves us with more questions than answers, setting the stage for a season filled with intrigue and suspense.
"Na'niłkaadii" is a strong start to the season, with its compelling storytelling, rich character development, and stunning visuals that capture the essence of the Navajo Nation. The episode expertly weaves together elements of crime, drama, and mystery, while also delving into the cultural and spiritual aspects of the Navajo people. It's a thrilling return to the world of Dark Winds and a promising beginning to what is sure to be another captivating season.
