Ghosts (US) Season 4, Episode 3: Halloween 4: The Witch - A Witching Hour at Woodstone

In the spooky spirit of Halloween, "Ghosts" Season 4 Episode 3, titled "Halloween 4: The Witch," delivered a frightfully entertaining tale that not only played on the Puritan fear of witchcraft but also introduced a new twist to the Woodstone estate's spectral inhabitants. The episode was a delightful mix of humor, horror, and historical references that kept viewers on the edge of their seats.

The episode begins with Jay's decision to cancel the annual Halloween festivities at Woodstone, fearing another catastrophe after the previous year's near-death experiences. This leaves the ghosts with nothing to do, which is when Patience, the Puritan spirit, seizes the opportunity to stir up trouble. Learning that Sam had conjured the dead during a past All Hallows' Eve, Patience accuses her of witchcraft and insists on a trial.

Boredom turns into a macabre form of entertainment as the other ghosts agree to participate in the trial. The atmosphere is initially playful, with the ghosts donning costumes and taking on roles within the mock trial. However, Patience's seriousness becomes apparent when she finds Sam guilty and suddenly, Sam disappears.

In a twist, the ghosts discover a statue in the yard that bears a striking resemblance to Sam, leading them to believe that Patience has turned her to stone. The truth is far less magical but just as confusing – the statue is an old relic from Hetty's time, and Sam is actually helping the Farnsbys move a table they bought at Jay and Sam's yard sale.

The real shock comes when Patience announces her intention to return to the dirt, citing the house's many temptations as incompatible with her pious nature. Her departure is not a solo one; she hints at the existence of "others" in the dirt, causing both the ghosts and the viewers to wonder about the new potential inhabitants of Woodstone.

Co-showrunner Joe Port suggests that Patience's return to the dirt is not the last we've seen of her, hinting at future appearances. Joe Wiseman confirms the existence of "others," asserting that it would be odd for Patience to fabricate such a story. The question remains whether these new ghosts will be as stringent and intense as Patience, or if they will bring a different dynamic to the Woodstone B&B gang.

Wiseman acknowledges the challenge of introducing new ghosts without overcrowding the property. The show's creators are cautious about straining credulity, yet they are excited about the possibilities that come with a larger property and an expanded narrative. The introduction of the underground space has opened up a whole new dimension for potential ghostly inhabitants.

"Halloween 4: The Witch" was a standout episode that not only provided a fun and frightful Halloween special but also set the stage for future storylines. The episode masterfully balanced humor with the supernatural, keeping the audience engaged and curious about what lies beneath the dirt of Woodstone. As the show continues to explore the dynamics between its ghostly cast and the potential for new characters, fans can look forward to more surprises and scares in the remaining episodes of Season 4.
