High Potential Season 1, Episode 6: Hangover - A Twisted Tale of Corporate Deceit and Murder

The sixth episode of High Potential, titled "Hangover," takes us on a thrilling ride through the dark underbelly of corporate America, where ambition, deception, and murder collide. The episode opens with Sam, a young woman, waking up in her boss' office with a pounding hangover and no recollection of the previous night's events. The office is in disarray, but the most shocking discovery is her boss, Elaine, lying dead on the floor, a pool of blood surrounding her lifeless body.

Morgan, played by Kaitlin Olson, is in the midst of her own spring cleaning when Detective Adam Karadec, portrayed by Daniel Sunjata, calls for her assistance at Metkair TechCorp. The company, which leases an entire floor, had hosted a party the night before to celebrate the launch of a new product. The murder victim, Elaine Barton, was the founder and CEO of the company, killed with her own Female Innovator of the Year Award. A looping video reveals Elaine's obsession with emulating the likes of Elizabeth Holmes and Steve Jobs.

As the investigation unfolds, we learn that Sam, who claims to be a loyal employee and admirer of Elaine, was found with a suspicious drawing in her notebook, depicting her standing behind Elaine with a knife. This, along with Sam's inability to recall the night's events due to a combination of alcohol and new medication, makes her the prime suspect in Elaine's murder.

The team, including Detectives Oz Osman and Daphne Forrester, delve deeper into the case, uncovering a toxicology report that indicates Sam had a mix of Diazepam and alcohol, potentially causing amnesia. They also find a mysterious check written by Elaine for $45,623 to cash and the word "FOREVER" written in large letters on Elaine's office wall.

Morgan's keen observation skills lead her to discover a karaoke playlist that helps narrow down the time frame of Elaine's murder. Through a series of interviews with party guests, they learn that Elaine was not in a good mood and that an argument was heard in her office. However, no one thought to check on it, as it was not unusual for Elaine to berate her employees.

As the pieces of the puzzle start to come together, Morgan and Adam interrogate Elaine's husband, Eric, who reveals that he was her first investor and that they had been getting along fine until the night of the party. He also confirms that Elaine had enemies among her employees.

The investigation takes a surprising turn when Morgan discovers a strip of photos in Sam's bra, including one of her posing with a magazine cover of Elaine's face made to look like a devil. This leads them to another employee, Denise, who admits to having a brief encounter with Sam at the party. Denise provides a crucial lead when she describes an unidentified woman with a square object on her arm, which turns out to be an insulin pump belonging to Carmen Jimenez.

Carmen, who was not invited to the party, is confronted by Morgan and Adam. Under pressure, she admits to being at the party and having a confrontation with Elaine. However, she insists that Elaine was alive when she left. Carmen's story is corroborated by Sam, who recalls getting angry after hearing about Carmen's encounter with Elaine.

As the team digs deeper, they uncover a web of deceit and corporate greed. Elaine's company, Medkair, was paying hush money to families, including Carmen's, to cover up the harmful effects of their product, Canary. This leads Morgan to believe that Elaine's murder was related to her company's illegal activities.

In a dramatic boardroom confrontation, Eric admits to providing hush money to the families but claims that Elaine was determined to launch the product despite the risks. He also reveals that he didn't agree with Elaine's decision, which could have led to an argument between them.

The episode reaches its climax when Morgan and Adam discover a two-way mirror in Elaine's office, behind which a camera was hidden. The footage reveals that Sam had confronted Elaine about quitting her job due to the company's unethical practices. Elaine had attacked Sam, leading to a struggle in which Elaine fell onto her award, causing her death. Sam, who had been knocked unconscious, woke up to find Elaine dead and herself covered in blood.

In the end, Morgan and the team conclude that Sam acted in self-defense and is unlikely to face any jail time. The day's events lead Morgan to appreciate her boss, Selena, and the team she works with, as they navigate the complex world of high-stakes corporate crime. As Morgan leaves for the day, she decides to join her colleagues for drinks, signaling a new chapter in her life as a valued member of the LAPD.
