In the spirited town of Springfield, the opening episode of The Simpsons'
35th season, "Homer’s Crossing," presents a satirical take on civic duty and the
perils of power. The narrative kicks off with a twist in the daily routine of
Springfield's children, as the school announces the discontinuation of the
school bus service. In response to the parents' collective frustration, the
school proposes a walkable alternative, but it requires the community's help to
keep the kids safe—crossing guards are needed.

In a moment that defines his character's impulsive nature, Homer Simpson accidentally volunteers for the role, much to his later dismay. Despite his initial reluctance, Homer steps into the limelight when he heroically saves a child, an act that transforms him into a local celebrity. The mayor, Quimby, impressed by Homer's bravery, secures funding for crossing guards, and Homer finds himself promoted to the rank of captain.
Dressed in a commanding uniform, Homer takes his new role to heart, hiring guards and taking on responsibilities that come with the territory. However, the adulation and authority soon go to his head, and his overzealous approach to the job begins to strain the community's goodwill. Despite Principal Skinner's warning about an impending chaotic Monday morning due to unforeseen events, Homer, blinded by his newfound power, dismisses the concerns.
The "Monday morning mayhem" unfolds as predicted, with a riot breaking out that Homer is ill-equipped to manage. This leads to a summons from Mayor Quimby, who questions Homer's handling of the situation. In a display of corruption, Homer blames the chaos on budget constraints and, to the astonishment of all, is granted an increased budget.
Mayor Quimby later observes Homer's overbearing behavior towards the citizens of Springfield and, following Chief Wiggum's counsel, decides to cut the crossing guard budget. Homer, feeling challenged and humiliated, vows to topple Quimby. This sets off a chain of events leading to an all-out war between the police and the crossing guards, with various law enforcement agencies joining the fray.
In the heat of the battle, Homer suffers a blow when struck by a school truck, leading to a hospital stay. It is here that his daughter, Lisa, imparts a crucial lesson, telling Homer that power has corrupted him, and it's time for a change.
