Becoming Karl Lagerfeld: Episode 4 - Tarnished Reputation

Episode 4 of "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld" dives into the intensifying war between Karl and Pierre Bergé. Pierre, wielding his vast influence in the fashion world, not only excludes Karl from social circles but also cripples Chloé's upcoming projects with cancellations and no-shows. Faced with a fading reputation and Aghion's pressure to mend fences, Karl finds himself at odds with Jacques.

The fallout from Yves Saint Laurent's troubled relationship with Jacques adds another layer of complexity. Word of Yves's deteriorating health and drug use reaches Karl through Anne-Marie Munoz. Meanwhile, Karl's tarnished reputation bleeds into his personal life, with his mother facing ostracization for a perceived association with Nazi ideology.

Desperate to control the narrative, Karl manipulates the media. Using Paris Match, he spreads a rumor of Yves's death, forcing Yves and Pierre into a public interview to refute the claim. This act, while securing Karl some advantage, permanently damages Yves's mystique.

Fueling the tension, Karl discovers Jacques's letter announcing his departure from Paris. This, coupled with finding Yves's love letters to Jacques, empowers Karl to leverage his newfound leverage. He uses these letters to intimidate the House of Saint Laurent, demanding Pierre cease his interference.

The episode also explores Jacques's life outside Paris. Though peaceful on the surface, his relationship with his father, revealed to be suffering from an immune disease, is strained. We learn through Jacques's sister that he sacrificed everything for Karl. Despite the initial comfort of returning to his roots and dressing conventionally, Jacques's bond with Karl remains strong.

Karl visits Jacques, seeking a reconciliation. Though initially happy to see him, Jacques ultimately chooses to stay with his family. In a poignant final scene, Jacques attends mass, seeking and seemingly finding his father's acceptance, hinting at a new chapter in his life.
