Seoul Busters Season 1, Episode 1: The New Captain - A Promising Start

The premiere episode of "Seoul Busters" kicks off with an intriguing introduction to our protagonist, Yu-bin, a man of many talents and a decorated police officer. His character is painted as someone who excels in every endeavor, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers within the police force. Yu-bin's accolades are so numerous that he's even been honored as an FBI agent, a testament to his exceptional service. Yet, in a surprising twist, he returns to Korea, not to rest on his laurels, but to beg the police chief for a field assignment. Despite the chief's reluctance, Yu-bin is sent to the Violent Crimes Unit 2 at Songwon Police Station, a unit that couldn't be more different from the one he's used to.

Seoul Busters - S01E01 -

The Violent Crimes Unit 2 is a squad with a notorious reputation for being the least effective detective team in the force. Their incompetence is on full display as they struggle to make a simple arrest, providing a comedic touch to the episode with their bumbling attempts. The rookie, Tan-sik, humorously electrocutes himself, while the lieutenant, Joong-Ryeok, loses a suspect due to his inability to stop a scooter. The farcical scene of Jung-hwan and Min-seo nearly fainting while chasing a suspect adds to the slapstick humor that characterizes the team's ineptitude.

Following this comedic disaster, the police chief is left with no choice but to replace the team captain and relocate the team to a new, makeshift office: a daycare center situated near the Songwon Police Station. The new office is a far cry from a professional environment, with toys scattered about and children playing, adding to the absurdity of the situation.

As the team speculates about their new captain, a mix of anticipation and dread fills the air. Jung-hwan playfully suggests that Joong-Ryeok is due for a promotion and might take on the role. However, their banter is interrupted by a call about a murder, sending Tan-sik and Joong-Ryeok to the scene. In a classic rookie mistake, Tan-sik gets the wrong address, leading to a hilariously awkward encounter where they break into the wrong house and mistake a sleeping man for a corpse.

Thankfully, Jung-hwan's timely call corrects their course, and they arrive at the actual crime scene, where they find a man dead with a suicide note. The team's initial examination is hasty and superficial, with Joong-Ryeok ready to dismiss it as a suicide. However, Yu-bin's unexpected arrival challenges their conclusions. He introduces himself as the new captain and proceeds to re-examine the scene, quickly pointing out the discrepancies that the team had overlooked, such as the mismatched printing paper.

Back at the office, Yu-bin's observational skills and attention to detail begin to win over the team, albeit gradually. Jung-hwan, in particular, tries to ingratiate himself with the new captain, despite the team's initial dislike for Yu-bin. A case briefing led by Joong-Ryeok reveals that the victim, Lim Dong-il, was a road manager for a famous star, Kang Min-jae. The team's lack of knowledge about Min-jae is met with Jung-hwan's disdain, until Yu-bin admits his own ignorance, leveling the playing field.

Yu-bin and Min-seo visit the entertainment company where Min-jae is managed, and their interaction with the CEO, Mr. Jang, is filled with tension and humor. Mr. Jang's initial portrayal of a shocked and saddened boss is called into question by an employee's account of Min-jae's abusive behavior. The episode ends with a hint of intrigue as Mr. Jang and Min-jae discuss the investigation over dinner, suggesting that there might be more to the case than meets the eye.

Meanwhile, Tan-sik, Joong-Ryeok, and Jung-hwan pore over CCTV footage, identifying a suspicious individual from the night of the murder. The revelation that the man is a con artist known to Tan-sik adds another layer to the case. The episode concludes with a surprising scene of children playing in the office, highlighting the team's unconventional workspace and setting the stage for more comedic and dramatic moments in the coming episodes.

"Seoul Busters" sets the stage for a season filled with action, humor, and mystery. The first episode does an excellent job of introducing the characters, their quirks, and the dynamics within the team. It also skillfully weaves in the central mystery of the murder case, promising a season of engaging police work and character development. With a perfect blend of comedy and crime drama, "Seoul Busters" is off to a promising start.
