Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 3: The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel - A Thrilling Adventure at the Cosmic Duchess

The third episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks' fifth season, titled "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel," takes the U.S.S. Cerritos crew on a wild adventure aboard the Cosmic Duchess, a resort ship the size of a moon. The episode, written by Stephanie Amante-Ritter and directed by Brandon Williams, is a delightful blend of humor, action, and character development that keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

Captain Carol Freeman records a log, setting the stage for the Cerritos' mission to help the resort deal with a nanite infestation. The nanites, a cluster of robots, have taken over the resort, and it's up to the Cerritos crew to capture and study them.

D'Vana Tendi is thrilled about the prospect of pest control, while Samanthan Rutherford and T'Lyn are glad to have her back. Bradward Boimler and Beckett Mariner are excited about the resort's amenities. However, Jack Ransom interrupts with news of a secret mission for Boimler.

Ransom, Boimler, and Andy Billups go undercover as vacationers, searching for Admiral Millius, who has gone AWOL due to "vacation madness." Meanwhile, Mariner is surprised to find her ex-girlfriend Jennifer Sh'reyan on the Cerritos, complicating the mission.

The away team discovers that the nanite cluster is harvesting material and energy for self-replication. Jen suggests using an energy cell as bait, but Mariner's impulsive decision to supercharge the cell with a phaser backfires, allowing the nanites to escape.

Boimler, Ransom, and Billups track Millius' acolyte on a mountain, leading to a dangerous ski chase. Boimler's honesty with the acolyte inadvertently alerts Millius to their presence. Meanwhile, Millius tries to convince Boimler to go AWOL with him, seeing a kindred spirit in the young officer.

The nanites form an icosahedron, capturing T'Lyn, Rutherford, and Tendi. Mariner and Jen, in their pursuit, end up trapped in a palm tree. They eventually lure the icosahedron into a trap using vibe tubes, which T'Lyn plays to disrupt the nanites' signal, leading to their incapacitation.

Millius is taken into custody, and the tiny U.S.S. Endeavor, which had been controlling the nanites, is discovered. Boimler comes up with a plan to return the Endeavor to their dimension, with Millius assigned to the mission. In a heartfelt moment, Mariner and Jen officially end their relationship, acknowledging their chaotic past.

"The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel" is a standout episode that balances humor with heartfelt character moments. The episode showcases the Cerritos crew's resourcefulness and camaraderie, while also exploring themes of relationships and personal growth. With its engaging plot and well-timed jokes, this episode is a testament to the show's ability to entertain and engage fans of the Star Trek universe.
