The second season of the gripping crime drama "The Gone" kicks off with a heart-stopping sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the episode. A 4x4 vehicle speeds down a winding mountain road, its driver shrouded in mystery, as Sergeant Bruce Harris (Scott Wills) addresses a crowd of locals and media in Mount Affinity. Harris officially closes the case on the murder of Ronan Garvey (Simon Mead) and the abduction of Sinead Martin (Rachel Morgan), assuring the public that the accused will face trial, despite their identity remaining unknown. He also dismisses Joy Webb Jones’s (Jessi Williams) claims about the 'Goatman' but warns that the investigation into this elusive figure is still ongoing.

The tension escalates as a distraught Theo Richter (Richard Flood) confronts Diana Huia (Acushla-Tara Kupe) about the disappearance of Aileen Ryan (Carolyn Bracken). In a parallel plot, Detective Sergeant Gwenda (Miriama Smith) informs Diana that she will officially join the Mount Affinity Police Force next month. Richter's urgency is palpable as he calls David (Shashi Rami) while Bruce tracks Aileen's signal. The signal leads them to a remote cabin in the woods, but not before they visit Linda Pastors (Rachel Bock), who reveals her suspicions about her husband Frank (Owen Black) and his potential involvement in a murder.
The cabin, riddled with bullet holes and signs of a struggle, becomes the new focus of the investigation. Diana calls Bruce for backup, and as they wait for a forensic team, Sinead is besieged by reporters outside the Collision High Court. She handles the questions with a stoic 'no comment' until Joy probes into the painful difference between her survival and Ronan's death. Inside the court, Sinead faces an emotional rollercoaster as she learns that Michaela Armstrong (Alison Bruce) is determined to secure bail for her children, Valeria (Ella Gilbert) and Ken Armstrong (Matt Whelan), despite their transgressions.
The episode takes a violent turn when Ginge (Poroaki Merritt-McDonald), overwhelmed by the loss of Jarred (Flynn Mhlhopt), physically assaults Buster Huia (Wayne Hapi) and escapes on a dirt bike. The forensics team at the cabin uncovers a bullet hole from a long-range semiautomatic rifle, leading them to a 4x4 with slashed tires and a laptop. Richter, now without his badge and gun, is sidelined, but Diana assures him she will request his reinstatement.
Judge Hannah Martin (Michelle Fairly) tries to engage Sinead in conversation about her experiences, but Sinead pushes her away, increasingly frustrated by the attention. Bruce shares his troubled history with Frank as they prepare for an interrogation. Richter loses his temper and attacks Frank when the teasing about Diana's missing mother goes too far. Frank abruptly ends the interrogation upon seeing a photo of the cabin, as if he's seen a ghost.
As they sift through Frank's personal effects, they learn that the laptop and phone from the cabin are password-protected, but the phone contains dried blood and the last call appears to have come from David, likely Aileen's phone. Doctor Ray Morris (Edwin Wright) greets Valeria at home, and although she's not in the mood to talk, she texts Diana requesting a conversation. Diana and Richter return to question Linda again, but the meeting yields no new information.
Auntie Wiki (Vanessa Rare) begins her own search for Aileen while tending to Buster's wounds. Sinead attempts to collect Ronan's personal belongings from Mervin De Leon (Nick Dunbar), who claims the police have them, but his rude demeanor and apparent discomfort with her request suggest otherwise. This tension leads to a confrontation with Ginge, who blames Ronan for Jarred's death. Despite the animosity, Ginge offers to help Sinead overcome her trauma by taking her to the place where she was held captive.
Bruce sets up Valeria for house arrest and returns to the station just in time to witness Richter being sworn in as a temporary New Zealand police officer. Richter joins the search party for Aileen but receives a call from Hannah before leaving, the reception is poor, and it's unclear if he heard her. Meanwhile, Michaela tries to lighten the mood over dinner with a whimsical rafting story involving Ken and Valeria, seemingly succeeding. As the day's search for Aileen ends, Richter goes solo and follows tracks to the edge of a mountain, where he either falls or is pushed. The episode concludes with Diana burning what appear to be ominous photos on her front porch, leaving viewers with a chilling cliffhanger.
