In the sixth episode of "What If…?" Season 3, titled "What If…1872?", the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ventures into the untamed terrain of the American Wild West, reimagining Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop as outlaws in the 1800s. This alternate reality explores a world where Chinese immigrants face oppression from a mysterious villain known as the Hood. The episode offers a fresh take on the characters, placing them in a setting ripe with both Western iconography and Marvel's signature superhero action.

The episode begins with John Walker, now a bandit, attempting to summon Shang-Chi, who in this reality is known as the Ten Rings, by ringing a bell ten times. Shang-Chi, along with Kate Bishop, the official Hawkeye, have been making their mark in the Wild West, taking down threats and keeping the peace. Their paths cross with Walker's when he tries to trap Shang-Chi, leading to a showdown that showcases the duo's formidable skills.
As Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop seek the Hood, they learn that he has been targeting Chinese immigrants, including Shang-Chi's sister, Xu Xialing, who came to America seeking freedom but disappeared after confronting the Hood. Their quest leads them to a young boy, Jun-Fan, whose village was abducted by the Hood on a "ghost train"—a trackless, hovering train designed by Tony Stark.
The train, filled with munitions and the hypnotized missing immigrants, is revealed to be under the control of Sonny Burch, who is working with the Hood. Burch, armed with a pocket watch that can hypnotize people, captures Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop, intending to present them to the Hood. In a shocking twist, the Hood is revealed to be none other than Xu Xialing herself, who has taken on the mantle after defeating the original Hood. She intends to use her new power to fight back against the racist forces oppressing Chinese immigrants.
However, Sonny Burch's true intentions are revealed when he admits to killing Kate's parents and using the hypnotized immigrants for his own gain. In a tragic turn of events, Kate Bishop, not knowing that the Hood is Shang-Chi's sister, kills Xialing in self-defense. The episode concludes with Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop continuing their mission to protect the Wild West, while Jun-Fan, inspired by their heroism, begins to train to become a hero himself.
"The Watcher," Uatu, faces consequences for his repeated interventions, as the other Watchers penalize him for saving Jun-Fan, thereby creating a new Iron Fist in the process. This episode not only provides a thrilling Western adventure but also sets up potential ramifications for the MCU's multiverse, hinting at future storylines that may unfold in live-action properties. "What If…1872?" is a compelling exploration of heroism, family, and the fight against oppression, offering a unique perspective on the MCU's rich tapestry of characters and stories.
