Alien is undoubtedly a milestone in the history of science fiction cinema. It not only pioneered the sci-fi horror subgenre but also created one of the most iconic and terrifying monster designs of all time.

Last year's Alien: Romulus dominated the global box office, proving that the Alien franchise still possesses immense vitality.

Recently, the highly anticipated TV series has finally arrived! For the first time, the story of Alien is set on Earth—our worst nightmare has come true…

Today, let’s talk about the recently released and well-received series, Alien: Earth.

The plot of Alien: Earth is set in 2120, two years before the first Alien (1979) and about 15 years after Alien: Covenant.

It cleverly fills in the gaps in the timeline before the original Alien film, allowing significant creative freedom to expand the Alien universe.

The series Alien: Earth returns to the "retro-futurism" aesthetic of the first two Alien films, steering clear of the overly complex themes such as the "Engineers" and "Android Origins" explored in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Ridley Scott, the father of the Alien franchise, serves as an executive producer of the series. It is said that he visited the set and was highly impressed by the meticulously recreated interior sets of the spaceship.

The show extensively utilizes practical sets and on-location filming, paying homage to the original Alion film.

Noah Hawley is the creator, writer, and executive producer of this series, as well as the director of its first episode. He is renowned for successfully crafting shows like Fargo and Legion.

Noah Hawley excels at blending diverse genres, striking a balance between horror, suspense, and profound explorations of human nature and societal themes.

The series features a number of fresh-faced young actors.

Rising American actress Sydney Chandler plays the female lead, Wendy, the central character of the series—a "synthetic human" whose consciousness has been transferred into a synthetic body.

Chandler has previously appeared in the film Don't Worry Darling and the series Sugar.

In interviews, Chandler mentioned that to portray Wendy, she strived to strike a balance between childlike innocence and robotic ruthlessness.

Yutani — CEO of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation

Prodigy Corporation was founded and is led by a young genius known as the "Prodigy," Boy Kavalier.

As an emerging force in the tech industry, this company specializes in the research and development of androids and artificial intelligence. It aims to achieve immortality by transferring human consciousness into robotic bodies.

Boy Kavalier — Founder of Prodigy Corporation

In simple terms, Weyland-Yutani is dedicated to biological weapons research, while Prodigy Corporation focuses on achieving human immortality through technology.

The philosophies and technological approaches of the two companies are fundamentally different, yet both represent humanity's greed and ambition to transcend its own limits.

Prodigy Corporation's technology allows human consciousness to be downloaded and transferred into synthetic bodies. These "synthetics" are referred to as "Hybrids."

The female lead, Wendy, is the first Hybrid created by Prodigy Corporation.

Her consciousness originated from a terminally ill girl, and she now inhabits a synthetic body.

As a synthetic human, Wendy possesses nearly superhuman capabilities, with visibly formidable combat prowess. Her character evokes strong parallels to Alita: Battle Angel, suggesting a deliberate setup for future confrontations with the Xenomorphs.

Here’s a quick supplementary note: In science fiction, several concepts are often confused, but they are fundamentally distinct:

Cyborg: A biological being enhanced or repaired with technological implants. It is flesh and blood, with only partial machine components.

Synth: A fully artificial organism, typically constructed from synthetic cells and tissues, designed to perfectly mimic humans.

Robot: An entity entirely composed of machinery, with no biological components.

Wendy lives with a group of companions who are also Hybrids.

They call themselves the "Lost Boys" and function as a close-knit family.

Meanwhile, the USCSS Maginot, a deep-space research vessel belonging to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, returns to Earth after a 65-year-long expedition—carrying with it a sample of the Xenomorph.

However, while preparing to enter Earth's atmosphere, the ship's navigation system suddenly malfunctioned, causing it to lose contact with ground control.

Ultimately, the USCSS Maginot crashed in territory controlled by Prodigy Corporation.

Before the ship crashed, the Xenomorph specimen had already escaped and killed most of the crew.

The ship's cyborg security officer, Morrow, who was still attempting to protect the alien specimen, survived by hiding in an escape pod.

Prodigy Corporation dispatched search-and-rescue teams and medical personnel to the disaster site, with Wendy's biological brother, Joe, among them.

Upon learning that her brother might be in danger, Wendy and her team of synthetic humans also entered the crash site in an attempt to save him.

The team of synthetic humans discovered horrifyingly deformed alien creatures inside the crashed spacecraft.

These organisms all exhibited parasitic traits and appeared to be mutated variants of the Xenomorph.

It is worth mentioning that the core component of the Facehugger is shown on screen for the first time: a translucent, tadpole-shaped larva.

It is likely this creature that, through the Facehugger's parasitism, infests a human host and eventually develops into the Chestburster.

Wendy finally found Joe, but since she now inhabits a synthetic body, he did not recognize her as his sister.

Faced with the imminent threat of the Xenomorphs, Wendy revealed her true identity to Joe, attempting to convince him to accept that she is no longer entirely human.

During the search and rescue operation, the Xenomorphs that escaped from the spacecraft began launching deadly attacks on humans.

A bloody massacre is now underway...

Meanwhile, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation is determined to reclaim the Xenomorphs, while Prodigy Corporation also seeks to seize them for its own purposes. This has sparked an intense conflict between the two corporate giants.

640 (16).png

After watching the first few episodes, as a longtime fan of the Alien franchise, I am thoroughly satisfied.

Alien: Earth delivers all the essential elements from the start—its plot is tight, thrilling, and full of suspense, marking a strong beginning.

While honoring the legacy of the original films, it also introduces innovations, such as the new concept of Synths and a futuristic Earth society dominated by corporate empires.

However, the biggest highlight is how it brings the classic horror of Alien to humanity's home planet, Earth, making the terror feel immediate and personal rather than allowing audiences to remain detached observers.

640 (17).png

It is commendable that, in this era of CGI, the series insists on using extensive practical props and sets.

This approach creates a visual style that blends futuristic technology with retro sci-fi aesthetics, paying homage to the original Alien films.

640 (18).png

The storyline also breaks new ground by skillfully blending the classic horror and claustrophobic tension of the Alien franchise with profound explorations of artificial intelligence, corporate control, and the essence of humanity.

Additionally, the series incorporates the allegory of Peter Pan, drawing a metaphorical parallel between Wendy and her "Lost Boys" and the eternally youthful Peter Pan, further deepening the theme of "immortality" in the show.

640 (19).png

However, while relocating the story to Earth opens up new narrative possibilities and expands the universe, it also sacrifices the classic elements of confined spaces and deep-space horror that defined the franchise.

How will the series maintain continuity and stylistic consistency with the original films? Only time will tell.

Fortunately, Ridley Scott remains as a producer, which should prevent the adaptation from straying too far from its roots.

640 (1).jpg

Overall, Alien: Earth delves into the core themes of the Alien franchise from a fresh perspective while expanding the storyline, making the series more comprehensive and richly layered.

It serves not only as a love letter to longtime fans but also as an ideal entry point for new audiences to explore the world of Alien.
