Better Call Saul S5E7

Kim’s proposal of marriage was no impulsive decision—she had both personal and legal considerations. After marrying, Jimmy wouldn’t be able (nor need) to hide anything from her. As his wife, if Jimmy faced any charges in the future, Kim would have the right to refuse to testify against him. Emotionally and logically, marriage was the best solution.

At the courthouse, Jimmy and Kim tied the knot in the simplest possible ceremony, with Huell serving as their witness. Stepping out of the building, they said a hasty goodbye—Kim had to rush to Mesa Verde Bank. The entire mess with Old Man Ackerman could only be described as a disaster. Rich and Kim sat across from Kevin, with no way to defend themselves. Even though the bank’s legal counsel Paige kept speaking up for them, Kevin remained grim-faced and said nothing.

Having said all there was to say, there was no reason to waste more time. Rich and Kim left Kevin’s office, each lost in their own thoughts. Rich figured the odds of continuing their partnership with Mesa Verde were fifty-fifty. Kim, however, had other plans. She turned around and headed back to Kevin’s office, cutting straight to the chase: the fault didn’t lie with the law firm. From the very beginning, Kim had advised choosing a different construction site and treating the original plot as an investment. During the negotiations with Jimmy, she had also suggested Kevin step back and ignore the opposing lawyer’s exorbitant demands. Kevin had rejected all these recommendations and ultimately struck a private deal with Jimmy. Therefore, the responsibility rested with Kevin, not the firm. Whether their partnership continued or not, Kim advised Kevin to listen more to his lawyers in the future.

After hearing her words, Kevin’s expression shifted—then quickly returned to calm. He wasn’t an unreasonable man. Having taken over the bank from his father and grown it into a successful business over decades, he wasn’t about to wallow in self-pity over a single setback. When Kevin said they’d meet again at the Thursday board meeting, Rich felt a surge of relief—it seemed Kim’s bold move had paid off.

With the firm’s major client secured, Kim returned home feeling lighthearted. It was their wedding day, after all, and newlyweds usually had plans. But Jimmy was listless. After thinking it over, he finally told Kim the truth: shortly after they’d parted outside the courthouse that morning, he’d received a call from Nacho, urging him to head to the detention center to meet a new client named Jorge.

In reality, this “Jorge” was none other than Lalo Salamanca, the Mexican drug lord and Hector’s nephew. Lalo’s demands were clear: no plea deal, no trial—just bail. Money wouldn’t be an issue if Jimmy succeeded. But Lalo was facing first-degree murder charges, along with a long list of other felonies. Anyone with common sense knew he’d surely skip bail and flee back to Mexico; the chances of securing his release were practically zero. So Jimmy had no intention of taking the case seriously—he’d put on a show of trying, then claim defeat when nothing worked.

Kim was relieved that Jimmy had told her about this. Early the next morning, she kissed Jimmy goodbye and hurried off to work. A short while later, Jimmy heard a knock at the door, assuming Kim had forgotten some documents. But when he opened it, he found Mike standing outside—and immediately felt a headache coming on. Mike wasn’t there to cause trouble, though; he’d come to save Jimmy, plain and simple.

Even behind bars, Lalo still had ways to pull the strings. Nacho had received a call from Lalo in prison, ordering him not only to take over the drug operation but also to burn down a fried chicken restaurant as an act of revenge. Nacho didn’t dare defy the order, so he turned to his contact—Mike.

Upon hearing the news, Gustavo weighed his options carefully. To protect Nacho, his inside man, burning down one restaurant was a small price to pay—he’d even do it himself. But Lalo’s ability to issue orders from prison was a major problem. If Lalo were eliminated in an American jail, the Mexican cartel would immediately suspect Gustavo. So Lalo had to be sent back to Mexico before any action was taken. And that meant getting Lalo bailed out—through Jimmy.

Mike had been the one to orchestrate Lalo’s arrest, so he naturally knew where the loopholes in the case were. Armed with the information Mike provided, Jimmy was overjoyed and immediately filed a motion for a bail hearing. The prosecution never anticipated that the defense would seize on such a minute detail: the key witness, librarian Lillian, had been coached by a private investigator before providing her latest testimony to the police, which constituted a potential case of obstruction of justice. Jimmy also rounded up “Jorge’s” family members living in the U.S., testifying that “Jorge” had no reason to flee the country.

Jimmy latched onto the procedural flaws, leaving the prosecution tongue-tied. The judge ultimately granted bail—set at a staggering $7 million. The amount made Jimmy jump out of his seat in objection, but Lalo shrugged it off as chump change. After the hearing, Jimmy hid in a corner, watching the tearful family members of the murdered wire transfer bank employee, and felt a heavy weight in his chest.
