Michael stood in the botanical garden parking lot, his hat pulled low. He rolled up his sleeve, his fingers tracing the blue-black flower tattoo on his right elbow. He slipped into the garden's staff area, sneaking through a closing security door just as an employee left. From a locker, he retrieved a cap and a jacket. A volunteer saw Michael in his new attire and asked what he was doing. Michael claimed the night manager had changed his shift.
Michael located his target and approached slowly, pretending to read a plant's identification plaque. He noticed another volunteer loitering nearby. This man's hands were perfectly clean, unlike the first volunteer, who had been gardening and had muddy hands. Opposite him was another man adjusting a camera, with several cigarette butts at his feet, clearly having waited a long time. Michael realized it was a trap and began backing away from the plant. The men closed in, one speaking into a hidden microphone, instructing waiting officers to move in.
Michael dashed through a group of schoolchildren on a tour. The officers, hindered by the children, slowed down. When they finally reached their target, they found only a cap and jacket hanging on a fence.
Meanwhile, Lincoln reunited with LJ on the highway. Lincoln solemnly told his son he was still a free person and could choose to go his own way and live his own life. But LJ insisted on staying with his father.
Michael sat in a corner of a small diner. A local man was loudly telling a waitress to turn up the TV. A news reporter was asking, "What is your response to the death of David Apolskis?" Hearing the name, Michael straightened up and looked at the screen. Mahone was defending himself, stating that Tweener was a fugitive and his death would be handled by the proper authorities. Mahone expressed regret, saying, "These things happen in the course of an investigation."
Another reporter stated, "There are reports that you have successfully recovered Scofield's hard drive." Michael slowly stood up. On TV, Mahone didn't answer the question directly. Pressed by reporters, he vaguely claimed the data merely led police to the botanical garden, refusing to comment further. Now Michael understood: with that hard drive, Mahone knew everything, including their next move.
At the FBI office, Agent Lang informed Mahone that the lab results were in. The flower Michael had been examining had a vial of nitroglycerin hidden beneath it. Mahone entered, stating that the explosive had enough power to level a building and then some.
