The Dead Boy Detectives is a supernatural drama filled with humor and suspense, exploring the wonderful journey between life and death.

Adapted from Neil Gaiman's comics, the show tells the bizarre adventures of two young ghosts, Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, along with their medium partner Crystal.

The friendship between Edwin and Charles is the core of this drama.

Edwin is an introverted teenager who died in a hate crime in 1916. His past looms over him like a shadow.

Charles is a lively punk teenager who died in 1990, with a personality completely different from Edwin's.

Both are ghosts who, for various reasons, failed to move on to the afterlife. They decided to stay and set up a detective agency specializing in handling supernatural cases. Not only do they help other ghosts fulfill their unfulfilled wishes, but they also continue to grow while searching for answers and each other.

Another highlight of the show is Crystal.

Crystal's appearance adds layers to the story. She is a young medium who lost her memory due to demonic possession. She can see and communicate with ghosts, allowing Edwin and Charles to better interact with the human world.

The Dead Boy Detectives is part of The Sandman universe, first appearing in The Sandman issue 25.

Its live-action debut was in the third season of the American TV series Doom Patrol, and it can be regarded as a spin-off of Doom Patrol.

The Dead Boy Detectives is like a ghost caught between two worlds, blending the weirdness and depth of The Sandman with the humor and boldness of Doom Patrol. However, despite its unique charm, the series was canceled by Netflix in September 2024 after the first season aired.

This show is a supernatural-style teen drama with certain appeal, but it is slightly lacking in depth and complexity.

The show adopts an anthology structure, with each episode focusing on a new supernatural case. Each story has its own unique flavor and is cleverly connected to the overall plot. Ghosts, demons, witches, and various strange creatures are intertwined, forming a dazzling supernatural adventure.

Sometimes, the characters help ghosts fulfill their wishes; at other times, they have to confront evil forces. The cases are bizarre, sometimes creepy and sometimes funny. Each case is full of suspense and surprises, and is full of imagination.

The flaws of this show are also easy to see, and some parts seem messy.

The plot is occasionally slow, with each episode lasting up to sixty minutes, giving a feeling of a slow pace. Some plots that should have been concise are stretched out and wordy, like adding an unnecessary layer of redundancy to an otherwise clear story.

The special effects are also a big drawback. Some scenes are obviously poorly done, like being forced together with a green screen, without any sense of reality. Especially the hell scenes, with computer-generated backgrounds that are so rough that they can be seen at a glance, completely losing the due sense of oppression and horror.

The characters in the show sometimes feel underdeveloped.

The personalities of the protagonists Edwin and Charles are quite distinct, but other characters seem weak. For example, although Crystal has the ability to communicate with spirits, her story line is not rich enough. Most of the time, she is like a supporting tool, only helping the protagonists complete their tasks, lacking her own independent emotions and motivations. Elvis, although with a unique image, is always elusive. His motives are intermittent, and his abilities are inconsistent, making him feel more like a random supporting role with no clear goals or direction.
