Rick and Shane drove to take Randall away. After all, Randall was an outsider, and the group was united in their refusal to take him in—Randall had no choice but to submit to his fate and be sent away from the farm.
Rick drove along, planning to find a suitable spot to leave Randall behind. Halfway there, he got out of the car to talk to Shane. Impulsive and combative by nature, Shane was caught off guard when Rick brought up the secret of his affair with Lori. Realizing Rick already knew the truth, Shane had no choice but to recount how he’d been forced to evacuate the hospital after mistakenly believing Rick was dead.
Rick and Shane got back in the car and continued driving. Shane urged Rick to just drop Randall off anywhere, but Rick insisted on finding a safe, survivable location for him.
They drove all the way to a small town, where Rick and Shane got out to check the surroundings. A few scattered walkers appeared in the town; to conserve bullets, Rick and Shane pulled out their knives and killed the walkers.
Randall, whose hands were tied behind his back, was thrown out of the car. Rick and Shane turned to leave, but Randall begged desperately for mercy, rambling on in despair. Growing annoyed, Shane pulled out his gun and aimed it at Randall. Just as the shot rang out, Rick moved with extraordinary speed to grab the gun from Shane’s hand—Shane’s aim was thrown off by Rick’s sudden action, and he missed Randall.
A fight broke out between the two over whether to shoot Randall. Meanwhile, a horde of walkers emerged from a building. Shane panicked and fled onto a bus, while Rick lay motionless on the ground, waiting for the walker horde to pass.
Beth had lost all hope for life and wanted to commit suicide. Lori discovered Beth had hidden a knife under her covers; under Lori’s demand, Beth handed over the knife. Later, Andrea objected to Lori’s forceful interference in Beth’s decision to hide the knife. She argued that Beth was a mature young woman and that Lori had no right to meddle in her actions.
Shane was trapped inside a bus, with dozens of walkers crowding around the door, trying to break in. Rick and Randall arrived in a car, pulling up to the back of the bus to rescue Shane. The three of them escaped safely, successfully evading all the walkers and getting away.
Andrea deliberately let Beth make her own choice about life and death. After slitting her wrist, Beth ultimately gave up the idea of suicide. Though Andrea had, to some extent, guided Beth to a new understanding of survival, Maggie still bluntly told Andrea to stay away from Beth from then on.
