Dale was bitten by a walker, and Daryl shot him to end his suffering. The group held a brief funeral for Dale. Carl, knowing he was indirectly responsible for Dale’s death, felt guilty and went to Shane to apologize. Not long before, Carl had encountered a walker in the woods; the walker tried to attack him, and Carl had fled in a panic back to the farm. That night, Dale was killed by the very walker Carl had failed to eliminate.
Shane understood the reason and didn’t blame Carl. Carl returned his handgun to Shane, but Shane thought Carl didn’t need to give it back. Ignoring Shane’s words, Carl turned and walked away, refusing to take the gun anymore.

Shane found Rick and told him about Carl’s experience. Rick took Carl to the second floor of the warehouse to talk. Although Carl was somewhat connected to Dale’s death, he hadn’t intended to harm Dale at all. Rick wanted Carl to keep using the gun to protect himself.

After much deliberation, Shane went into the warehouse. Randall, whose eyes were blindfolded, couldn’t see Shane. Shane quietly took Randall out of the warehouse, and the two walked deeper into the woods, getting farther from the farm. Under Shane’s coaxing, Randall let his guard down—Shane seized the opportunity and killed him.

To create the illusion that Randall had escaped after attacking him, Shane broke his own nose and returned to the farm. He lied to the others, claiming Randall had run away. Daryl, Glenn, and Rick followed Shane into the woods; the four split into two search teams to look for Randall. As dusk fell, the woods were swallowed by darkness, and pale moonlight filtered through the leaves onto the ground. During their search, Daryl and Glenn encountered walkers and worked together seamlessly to take them down.

Shane led Rick forward. Halfway there, Rick stopped, eyeing Shane suspiciously. Shane turned around and looked at Rick with a hint of doubt. Rick resumed a normal expression and continued walking with Shane. The two passed through the woods and reached an open meadow. Shane pulled out his gun and aimed it at Rick. Rick quickly formulated a plan: he drew the handgun from his waist and pretended to negotiate with Shane. When Shane let his guard down, Rick shot and killed him.

Rick was overcome with emotion after killing Shane. As Shane lay on the ground, on the verge of turning into a walker, Rick turned away in sorrow—only to find Carl standing not far behind him. Carl, his face filled with grief, raised his gun at Rick. Rick thought Carl resented him for killing Shane, but in reality, Carl had seen Shane turning into a walker and approaching Rick, which was why he’d suddenly raised his gun. A gunshot rang out, and Shane was hit by the bullet, falling to the ground. Rick turned around and looked at Shane’s body, finally understanding what had happened.
