The arrival of a new vicar, Alphy Kotteram (Rishi Nair), throws Grantchester into a whirlwind in season 9, episode 3. Friction arises immediately as Alphy stumbles upon a burglary at the vicarage, only to discover it's the new vicar himself, unfamiliar with the custom of announcing his arrival.

Meanwhile, tensions simmer between the Baron and Walker families over a long-standing land dispute. This simmer reaches a boiling point when patriarch Albert Baron is found dead from an apparent suicide. However, his son Harvey (Ned Porteous) believes foul play is afoot, especially when he discovers the rifle used doesn't belong to his father.

Unbeknownst to Alphy, Geordie Keating (Robson Green) has a history of relying on vicars for assistance with investigations. Despite his initial reluctance, Alphy is drawn into the case when Harvey presents his suspicions. Together, they delve into the secrets hidden beneath the idyllic surface of Grantchester.

The investigation takes a peculiar turn when Alphy discovers a hidden love letter addressed to Harvey, not Rachel, from her fiancé Jamie Walker (Daniel Fraser). This revelation casts doubt on the legitimacy of their upcoming marriage and suggests a deeper connection between the two men.

Adding another layer of complexity, Alphy finds himself drawn to Rachel (Sophie Jones), leading to an unexpected kiss. This encounter becomes more significant when it's revealed Rachel witnessed the fight between Albert and Lionel Walker (Jay Villiers) just before the supposed suicide.

The truth behind Albert's death unravels as Geordie discovers a bloody handkerchief with Lionel's initials at the crime scene. Lionel confesses to being present during the altercation but denies killing Albert. A flashback reveals a struggle for the gun, with Lionel insisting he panicked and fled after Albert was shot. However, suspicion falls back on Rachel when Alphy uncovers a picture of her holding the same bloody handkerchief.

The investigation culminates in the revelation that Rachel witnessed the entire incident and allowed Albert to die to protect the secret of Jamie and Harvey's relationship. She planted the handkerchief on Lionel to frame him and ensure the wedding went through.

Justice prevails as Rachel is arrested for her role in Albert's death. Despite her pleas for a future with Jamie, she faces the consequences of her actions.

The episode concludes with a newfound sense of camaraderie between Geordie and Alphy. They share a pint at the pub, finally acknowledging their reliance on one another. As Alphy integrates into the Grantchester community, a sense of hope emerges despite the tragic events that unfolded.
