The episode opens with Alphy attending a fundraising party at the Marwood Manor, hoping to secure much-needed funds for the ailing church. However, the evening's festivities are abruptly cut short when Alphy stumbles upon a gruesome discovery – the body of a young man, Dennis Lacey (played by a guest actor), the estate's gardener, lies lifeless in the basement.

Geordie arrives at the scene and quickly identifies the victim. The cause of death is multiple stab wounds inflicted with a unique weapon, leaving both detectives baffled. Further investigation reveals a crumpled note in Dennis's pocket, hinting at blackmail. It demands a hefty sum of £1,000 in exchange for keeping a "dark secret" hidden.

Suspicion falls on the manor's inhabitants, Lord Marwood (Richard Goulding) and his wife, Lady Marwood (Marianne Oldham). Alphy, noticing Lord Marwood behaving suspiciously near the servants' quarters before the murder, raises his doubts. Geordie questions the couple, unearthing a web of deceit.

Beatrice (Lucy Briers), Lady Marwood's sister and a dress designer, becomes another focal point. Alphy picks up on her nervous demeanor during questioning, noticing bloodstains on a pair of her scissors. As the investigation progresses, it is revealed that Beatrice had been engaged in a secret affair with Lord Marwood, much to the fury of Dennis, who had stumbled upon their illicit relationship.

Meanwhile, Lady Marwood confides in Leah Carpenter (Cara Horgan), a young maid with a mysterious past. The episode subtly hints at a deeper connection between them, suggesting Lady Marwood may harbor feelings for Leah as well.

The investigation takes a dramatic turn when Geordie discovers Lord Marwood paid Dennis the demanded sum, fearing his wife would discover the affair. However, Lord Marwood adamantly denies killing Dennis, claiming self-defense.

A closer look at Leah reveals a crucial detail. She is now sporting a beautiful bracelet, which Geordie and Alphy suspect might be a gift from the Marwoods to appease her silence. This revelation leads them to re-evaluate Leah's role in the events.

The truth comes crashing down during their confrontation with Leah. Overcome by a mixture of love and fear for Lady Marwood, Leah confesses to killing Dennis. She reveals that Dennis, upon discovering the affair, had misinterpreted her initial discomfort as a violation. Afraid of the potential scandal and desperate to protect Lady Marwood, Leah used the scissors to silence Dennis.

The episode concludes with a bittersweet resolution. Lady Marwood, though heartbroken by Leah's betrayal, remains surprisingly indifferent to the missing bracelet. She hands Alphy a check for a significantly larger sum than originally offered, hinting at her desire to maintain some connection and influence.

Geordie returns home to a tense situation with Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) and their daughter, Esme (Skye Lucia Degruttola), who are embroiled in a heated argument. Alphy, meanwhile, settles into his role at the vicarage, slowly gaining the trust of the community. Despite initial friction, Geordie offers Alphy a beer, marking a potential turning point in their relationship. As the episode closes, they share a moment of camaraderie, a sign of their future partnership in solving Grantchester's mysteries.
