Murder Mindfully Season 1, Episode 2: Happiness - Finding Solace in Sin

In the second episode of Murder Mindfully, titled "Happiness," the narrative delves deeper into the twisted psyche of Björn Diemel, a man whose pursuit of a balanced life takes a macabre turn. The episode commences with a haunting flashback to the brutal incident involving Igor, a victim of Dragan's violent outburst. The visual of Dragan setting Igor ablaze and assaulting him with an iron bar is a stark reminder of the darkness that permeates this series. Following this act of terror, Dragan intimidates a school bus full of children, coercing them into deleting incriminating videos from their phones.

The police, led by the relentless Egmann, are hot on Dragan's trail. An intriguing subplot emerges as it's revealed that Egmann shares a history with Diemel, having attended the same school. This connection raises eyebrows among the police force, particularly Moller, who questions the potential for conflict of interest. However, Egmann dismisses these concerns, assuring her colleague that personal history will not interfere with the case.

Diemel, in a precarious balancing act, picks up his daughter from the trainee, distracting her with ice cream while covertly stowing Dragan in the trunk of his car. The tension mounts as Diemel encounters Moller, who requests to search the vehicle. With his legal acumen, Diemel artfully evades the search, even jesting about Dragan's presence in the trunk, which Moller takes as a joke. This encounter is a masterclass in subterfuge, showcasing Diemel's ability to manipulate situations to his advantage.

As Diemel and his daughter, Emily, embark on their journey to the lake house, the audience is made privy to the fact that Emily is blissfully unaware of the fugitive hidden in her father's car. The tranquility of their time at the lake house is juxtaposed with the grim reality of Dragan's fate. Diemel, in a moment of negligence or perhaps a subconscious decision, forgets to release Dragan from the trunk, leading to the mobster's demise from heat exposure.

The next morning, as Diemel and Emily enjoy breakfast and a swim, the stench of death lingers in the car, but Diemel dismisses Emily's concerns, maintaining the facade of a perfect father-daughter getaway. Once back in the city, Diemel returns Emily to her mother, Kathrina, and ignores the flurry of missed calls and messages, choosing instead to focus on the next challenge: disposing of Dragan's body.

Diemel's inexperience with corpse disposal is palpable as he grapples with nausea and indecision. Drawing upon Breitner's teachings, he manages to calm himself and devises a plan. In a gruesome turn of events, Diemel dismembers Dragan's body, using a wood chipper to mince the parts and disposes of them in the lake. In a final act of concealment, he keeps Dragan's ring finger and thumb, ensuring the body cannot be identified.

Meanwhile, Moller, oblivious to Diemel's return to the lake house, presents Egmann with photos of Diemel and Emily at the lake house. The absence of Dragan in the images leads Moller to believe that Diemel is innocent, but Egmann's scrutiny of the photos reveals nothing incriminating.

As Diemel burns his clothes and Dragan's at the lake house, he sits down to enjoy a cold beer and reflects on his actions. Surprisingly, he finds a sense of peace knowing that he has killed Dragan. He believes he has saved the world, and more specifically, his daughter, from having to deal with a psychopath like Dragan. As he savors his cold beer, a bird accidentally flies away with Dragan's ring finger, which he had set aside.

This episode of "Murder Mindfully" is a chilling exploration of how the pursuit of happiness can lead to the darkest of deeds. Diemel's transformation from a man seeking balance to a killer is both tragic and compelling, offering a stark commentary on the lengths one might go to protect their loved ones and the illusion of a perfect life. The episode ends on a note of bitter irony, as Diemel's actions, intended to create a safer world for his daughter, only plunge him deeper into a morass of crime and deception.
