The flames of the Donnager's self-destruction had not yet fully faded in the cosmos when Holden, Naomi, Alex, and Amos drifted precariously through the dust of the Asteroid Belt aboard their escape vessel, the Tachi. As the group grappled with fuel shortages and an uncertain future, their ship's communication system suddenly picked up a narrowband signal— a direct transmission from Commander Johnson of Tycho Station. In the message, Johnson’s steady, authoritative voice offered safe haven and much-needed supplies, on the condition that they travel to Tycho to assist with an investigation into a missing person case.

Holden made his decision almost instantly. After the consecutive crises of the Canterbury’s destruction and the Donnager’s attack, this ragtag team was in desperate need of a stable base, and even more so of Tycho Station’s resources to uncover the masterminds behind the violence. But his proposal was met with immediate and firm opposition from Naomi. The Belter mechanic’s expression darkened, her tone laced with un disgust as she warned the others that Johnson was no ally— his offer of sanctuary undoubtedly came with hidden agendas.

Meanwhile, on Ceres Station, Detective Miller followed the trail left by Julie Mao. Having previously infiltrated Julie’s apartment, he had uncovered not only threatening messages from her father demanding her return home but also encrypted communications cryptically referencing "the Anubis" and "cargo that must not fall into the wrong hands." Coupled with the clue that Julie had piloted the Knight to intercept the Anubis, Miller deduced sharply that the missing heiress was not merely lost— she had been actively searching for something mysterious aboard the Anubis, something so valuable that she was willing to confront powerful unknown forces.

Miller’s investigation soon attracted attention. While eating, he was approached by an OPA member who slid into the seat beside him. The man offered the location of individuals who had harmed Miller’s associates, then extended an invitation: "Earthers are born with the right to breathe fresh air and gaze at the blue sky, while we cower in fear of running out of food and water under their rule. The Belt deserves its own leaders."

The situation in the Asteroid Belt continued to deteriorate in the wake of the Canterbury’s destruction. When Holden’s earlier broadcast— claiming Mars Fleet was behind the attack— spread across the stations, the long-simmering anger of miners oppressed by Earth and Mars erupted into full-blown unrest. Protests broke out on Ceres, Eros, and other outposts, with some radicals even attacking Earth’s Belt outposts, and chaos spread rapidly. With no survivors from the Donnager’s self-destruction to confirm Holden’s fate publicly, the outside world widely assumed he had perished in the explosion. The former Canterbury XO, who had sought only to expose the truth, was posthumously hailed as a martyr amid the upheaval.

Naomi’s vehement opposition to traveling to Tycho stemmed from a dark, buried chapter in Belt history. Eleven years earlier, a group of miners, fed up with resource exploitation and injustice, had seized a Belt station and issued legitimate demands for better treatment. When negotiations stalled and the miners— low on ammunition and supplies— laid down their weapons to surrender, Johnson, who had been tasked with quashing the rebellion, ignored the surrender agreement and ordered an indiscriminate attack on the station, brutally massacring every miner. The tragedy left an indelible scar on the Belt, and Johnson became a symbol of cruelty and bloodlust in the eyes of all Belters.

Faced with Naomi’s fierce objection and this horrific revelation, Holden was torn. On one side lay their only chance of survival and the possibility of uncovering the truth; on the other, a dangerous ally with blood on his hands. Meanwhile, Tycho Station loomed in the distance like a massive shadow— a beacon of hope for survival, yet harboring unseen dangers. Miller continued his search for Julie on Ceres, and as the OPA’s scrutiny, the mystery of the Anubis, the spreading unrest, and Johnson’s dark past wove together into a vast web, the fates of all involved became inextricably intertwined. And the ship they now called home? They renamed her the Rocinante— Don Quixote’s steadfast steed.
