The balance of power in the Solar System hangs precariously, and the standoff between Earth and Mars has reached a fever pitch, while a conspiracy hidden in the stardust is quietly emerging. During a high-level United Nations meeting, Allen White openly proposes a surprise attack on Mars’ two moons—Phobos and Deimos—under the pretext of "containing Martian expansion and seizing strategic resources." He argues that destroying these critical Martian supply and defense outposts will drastically shift the power dynamics of the Solar System in one fell swoop. The proposal sparks an immediate uproar. The UN Fleet Commander, well aware that such an act will ignite a full-scale interstellar war with countless innocent lives lost to the void, argues vigorously against it but fails to alter the course of events. Ultimately, he chooses to resign as the strongest form of protest, sacrificing his career to let out one final cry for the fragile peace.

Meanwhile, Holden and his crew aboard the Rocinante endure numerous hardships to successfully land at Tycho Station, a key hub of the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) led by the legendary Johnson. Their visit is no accident—they carry the terrifying truth they witnessed firsthand on Eros: an out-of-control virus experiment is underway, where a mysterious substance known as the protomolecule is mutating at an alarming rate, posing an existential threat to all life. In Johnson’s command center, Holden lays bare the bizarre phenomena on Eros’ surface, the remains of creatures infected by the virus, and the clues of the experimental facilities, emphasizing gravely that if the experiment spreads, the entire Solar System will face imminent destruction.

In a bar adjacent to the UN headquarters on Earth, a conversation between Ava Sara and a delegate stirs up a long-buried memory in Johnson’s mind. Eleven years earlier, asteroid belt miners, fighting for basic survival resources, seized Anderson Station. Having run out of ammunition and supplies, they surrendered, pleading only for fair treatment and the right to survive. However, to deter rebellious forces in the asteroid belt, Earth’s authorities deliberately concealed the truth of their surrender and issued an order to Johnson—who was tasked with quelling the uprising—to "eradicate the rebels." Unaware of the deception, Johnson led his troops in executing the order, massacring the unarmed surrenderers. When the truth finally came to light, he witnessed the hypocrisy and cruelty of Earth’s government firsthand. Overwhelmed by guilt and anger, he resolutely defected to join the OPA, an organization fighting for the freedom of asteroid belt inhabitants, and rose to become its core leader through his extraordinary courage and leadership. The truth about the virus experiment brought by Holden reinforces Johnson’s conviction that Earth’s senior officials have stopped at nothing for power and profit. He immediately decides to ally with Holden’s team to stop this catastrophic conspiracy.

Under Johnson’s coordination, the OPA assembles its elite forces and joins Holden’s team in tracking down leads, eventually pinpointing a mysterious stealth ship. Cloaked by advanced stealth technology, the ship moves undetected through space, serving as the mobile base for the protomolecule virus experiments. Combat erupts instantly as OPA warships and the Rocinante coordinate to breach the stealth ship’s defensive shields.

When the team forces their way aboard, the sight before them is chilling: the ship’s interior is filled with sophisticated experimental equipment, petri dishes containing mutated biological tissues, and the air reeks of a pungent chemical stench. A group of scientists, driven by fanatical obsessions, are fully immersed in their experiments, oblivious to the surrounding combat and even greeting the intruders with maniacal grins.

As the battle progresses, the core secret of the experiment is completely uncovered: funded by an unknown force, these scientists have long been conducting research and modification of the protomolecule virus on Eros, aiming to create a highly contagious and destructive biological weapon that will reshape the Solar System’s power structure through virus control. During his conversation with the scientists, Johnson reaches a consensus—he is willing to let the researchers continue their work on the protomolecule, regardless of who holds power. Just as the cooperation is about to be finalized, Miller shoots and kills the scientists, then leaves without a word.
