On the tarmac of Kahului Airport in Maui, Shane Patton, a newly married real estate agent, stared intently as staff loaded a crate containing human remains onto a plane. A curious elderly couple approached him, tentatively asking if he had any connection to the death at the White Lotus Resort. Shane only replied briefly that he had just finished his honeymoon there, his expression etched with an indescribable gravity. The camera then flashes back a week earlier, where this resort, hailed as a "paradise on earth," was welcoming a group of guests with hidden worries, marking the start of a drama revolving around wealth, privilege, and the fragility of human nature.

The first to appear were the newlywed couple Shane and Rachel, whose marriage revealed subtle imbalance from the very beginning. Born into a wealthy family, Shane exuded the arrogance of the privileged class and had an almost harsh pursuit of perfection for his honeymoon experience. When he discovered that the "Pineapple Suite" his mother had booked in advance had been mistakenly occupied, he immediately flew into a rage at Armond, the resort manager, with no regard for the occasion or other people's feelings. Rachel, a magazine writer, outwardly tried to defuse the tension with a gentle demeanor, but her inner turmoil had already begun to stir. After a conversation with Nicole, a tech tycoon who appeared later, she quietly began to reflect on whether she had rashly entered the marriage merely for material comfort.

Arriving almost simultaneously with the young couple was the Mossbacher family, led by Nicole. As the CFO of a health technology company, Nicole was shrewd and capable, serving as the family's undisputed financial backbone. However, this status had also created an emotional rift between her and her husband, Mark. Plagued by suspected cancer, Mark anxiously awaited his test results. He tried to divert his attention by reaching out to his son, but repeatedly met with rejection. The family's two children were also mired in conflict: Olivia, a college student, spent her days clinging to her best friend Paula by the pool, gossiping about other guests and showing open disdain for her introverted younger brother, Quinn. Quinn, meanwhile, immersed himself in the world of electronic devices, becoming the loneliest member of this affluent family, completely marginalized by his sister and her friend.

The appearance of Tanya McQuoid, an heiress to the Walmart fortune, added a profound emotional layer to the episode. This elegant, middle-aged woman arrived at the resort with her mother's ashes, hoping not only to fulfill her wish of scattering them but also to find inner peace and a new emotional anchor in this pure land. Upon her arrival, she headed straight for the spa, only to be told that all appointments were fully booked. Just as she felt disappointed, Belinda, the spa manager, offered her a helping hand, creating a special healing ritual tailored for her instead of the regular massage service. Belinda's understanding and care shone like a beam of light into Tanya's "messy love life," prompting Tanya to instantly conceive the idea of partnering with Belinda to open a new spa, seeing her as a salvation from her suffering.

Beyond the luxury and troubles of the guests, the living conditions of the resort staff are equally thought-provoking. Armond, the manager, remained perpetually on edge, adhering strictly to the principle of "customer first." He had to deal with Shane's unreasonable outbursts while overseeing the resort's daily operations, harboring undisclosed secrets deep in his heart. Lani, a newly hired intern, chose to hide the fact that she was about to give birth, desperate to hold onto this hard-earned job. The most dramatic moment occurred on the night of the lobster dinner—Lani suddenly went into labor in Armond's office. Already overwhelmed, Armond was forced to rush between attending to the expectant mother and serving the distinguished guests. In the end, Lani gave birth to a baby girl safely, adding a brief but warm touch to the tense and oppressive atmosphere.

Many scenes in this episode contain profound metaphors: Shane's fury at the check-in desk bluntly reveals the arrogance and sense of entitlement of the privileged class; Belinda's thoughtful service at the spa highlights the invisible emotional labor behind those in the service industry; the extremely awkward interaction between Mark and Quinn by the beach exposes the common communication barriers in wealthy families; and the stark contrast between Lani's labor in the office and the guests toasting and reveling in the restaurant underscores the huge gap between the guests' luxurious lifestyles and the staff's harsh struggles. These scenes intertwine, making each character's conflicts increasingly prominent: Shane and Rachel's marriage teeters on the edge amid quarrels and compromises; the suspense surrounding Mark's health deepens as his call with the doctor is suddenly cut off; and the future of Tanya's hope placed in Belinda remains uncertain.

As night falls, the surface conflicts temporarily subside: Shane and Rachel put their quarrels aside and embrace, beginning their long-overdue honeymoon night; Tanya returns to her room, carefully reading through Belinda's materials, her eyes sparkling with longing for the future; only Mark tosses and turns over the interrupted phone call, the shadow of cancer lingering over him. Yet the show offers no respite— the camera cuts back to the airport once more, where Shane stands exactly one week later, his gaze still fixed on that crate of human remains. The core mysteries that run through the entire season—"Who died?" and "How did it happen?"—are officially planted at the end of the first episode.
