Bookie Season 2, Episode 1: Mahnanga - A High-Speed Start

The second season of the Max original series "Bookie" kicks off with a bang in its first episode, titled "Mahnanga." The high-octane opening scene sets the tone for the rest of the season, as we follow Danny Colavito, portrayed by Sebastian Maniscalco, who finds himself in a high-speed predicament. Clocking in at 109 mph in a 65 mph zone, Danny is pulled over by Officer Wilkes, played by Eric Allan Kramer. Drenched from a previous pool mishap, Danny draws the officer's suspicion, leading to a series of field sobriety tests. Despite passing with flying colors, Danny is still issued a ticket for driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone. The tension escalates when Officer Wilkes insists on checking the trunk, uncovering Danny's cash-heavy business practices. In a clever move, Danny identifies Wilkes as a militia member and exploits this to his advantage, offering a bribe to forget the money but not the speeding ticket.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Ray/Rayfield's Grandma, played by Arnetia Walker, is convinced that she and John Franklin/Frank, portrayed by Brent Jennings, are being punished for their repeated adulterous acts. Their theological debate is interrupted by a call from 307, played by Eric Lopez, who fabricates an injury to delay a payment. Ray, not one to be fooled, arranges a confrontation at a gas station.

The plot thickens as Lorraine Colavito, played by Vanessa Ferlito, and Hector, portrayed by Jorge Garcia, await news at the hospital, where Ray informs them of Frank's survival and Danny's mission to Modesto to bring Sandra, played by Andrea Anders, and Anthony, played by Maxim Swinton, home. Danny's attempt to persuade Sandra to return is met with resistance, as she is enjoying a newfound sense of well-being. The situation is further complicated by Anthony's announcement that Danny's car is being towed. Sandra's persuasive skills come into play, as she convinces the tow driver, played by Dennis Cockrum, to release the car for a hefty sum of $1,200.

As the Colavito family makes their way home, Frank wakes in the hospital, muttering the mysterious word "Mahnanga." The strange occurrences continue the next morning when Wendy, played by Dale Dickey, not only moves in with Danny and Sandra but also attempts to place a bet on the Sacramento Kings, much to Sandra's chagrin.

The day takes a turn for the bizarre when Danny and Ray meet Walt Dinty, portrayed by Rob Corddry, who proposes a Botox deal. Walt has a dermatologist in his debt, and instead of money, he's taking Botox as payment, with Sandra agreeing to sell it in her retail store on a 50/50 split.

Grandma's frustration with Frank's incessant muttering of "Mahnanga" reaches a boiling point when Hector and Lorraine offer their assistance. Grandma quickly discerns Lorraine's relationship with Ray and warns her of the consequences.

The episode culminates in a tense collection mission at Brad Garrett's place, played by Brad Garrett himself. Ray's patience wears thin as Brad ridicules him for bringing his baby along, leading to a physical altercation that ends with Brad flat on his back.

"Mahnanga" is a gripping start to "Bookie" Season 2, filled with high-speed chases, family drama, and the underbelly of the sports gambling world. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is intricate, leaving viewers eager for the next episode. With a perfect blend of humor, suspense, and character-driven storytelling, "Bookie" continues to deliver a compelling narrative that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
