Laid (2024) Season 1, Episode 6: More Handsome Than Joe Jonas - Reconnecting with the Past

In the sixth episode of "Laid" (2024), titled "More Handsome Than Joe Jonas," Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu) continues her quest to understand the mysterious deaths of her ex-lovers while also navigating the complexities of her personal relationships. The episode begins with Ruby pleading for AJ's (Zosia Mamet) forgiveness after sleeping with Zack Bridgerton (Andre Hyland). AJ, however, is not as forgiving and asks both Ruby and Zack to leave her apartment.

Ruby then shows up at Richie Diane's (Michael Angarano) apartment in the middle of the night with all her belongings. After some joking, Richie lets her in, and they discuss why AJ kicked her out. Meanwhile, Zack is also struggling, as AJ tells him that there is nothing he can do to stop her from breaking up with him, even after he gains 200,000 followers and is approached by a luggage company.

Ruby tries to rationalize her actions with Zack as she brushes her teeth, and Richie offers her some comfort, suggesting that many people seek physical attention when they are emotionally vulnerable. He then tries to help Ruby get back into the idea of "Cyrano sex" by wearing a Joe Jonas mask, comparing Isaac's and Joe's jawlines.

The next day, Ruby and Richie plan to visit Aubrey (Alexandra Shipp), whom Ruby describes as "the one who got away." However, their visit is interrupted by Richie's ex-girlfriend, Chelsea (Chloe Fineman), who is unhappy to find out that Richie is not dying. Detective Brenowitz (David Denman) observes all this from his unmarked cruiser and watches them go into a tattoo shop to meet Aubrey.

Aubrey immediately recognizes Ruby and is more accommodating when Ruby convinces her to change her ax-throwing date to give her a tattoo. Richie comments on Ruby getting an "R" tattoo on her forearm, and Aubrey realizes that Ruby treated her the same way she treats others. As Aubrey explains Ruby's complex intimacy issues, a bullet from an altercation outside smashes the window and hits Aubrey in the head.

After the incident, Ruby and Richie return to his apartment, where Ruby composes a letter to her father while Richie stares into space, covered in blood. Ruby eventually breaks down, and Richie convinces her to reach out to AJ, though his efforts are ignored.

The episode takes a dramatic turn when Ruby's boss, Brad (Ryan Pinkston), is revealed as the spell caster. AJ uncovers this when she deletes photos of her and Ruby and comes across an old video of Brad putting the hex on Ruby. This revelation changes the course of the case and provides a new direction for Ruby's journey.

"More Handsome Than Joe Jonas" is a pivotal episode that delves deeper into Ruby's emotional journey and the mystery surrounding her ex-lovers' deaths. It explores her relationships with her friends, ex-lovers, and potential romantic interests, while also highlighting her personal growth and self-discovery. As viewers, we are left eager to see how Ruby will continue to navigate these challenges and what revelations lie ahead in her quest for answers.
