When Jimmy first decided to turn over a new leaf, his first job was as a mail clerk at Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM)—back then, Kim was still a law intern. He sorted and delivered mail during the day, studied at a community college at night, and later pursued a law degree through online education. After years of hard work, he finally obtained his bar license. On the day he got his license, he excitedly told his brother Chuck, hoping to work at HHM so the two brothers could stand in court together, upholding justice and punishing evildoers. But reality was cruel: after the partners discussed it, Howard was sent to turn down Jimmy’s request.

Now, Jimmy had found his footing in his legal career, specializing in Elder Law. His business was thriving, and he had become a regular at major nursing homes. That day, Mrs. Landry from Sandpiper Crossing Nursing Home needed to handle will formalities, but she was short on cash—she only had a little over $40 in her wallet, not even half of the service fee. Mrs. Landry apologized repeatedly, promising to make up the difference as soon as she received her living allowance from the nursing home the following week. Jimmy didn’t press her, but after he walked out of her room, he realized there was something off about her words. Elderly people’s pension and social security checks were sent directly to them—so why would she mention an “allowance”? He went back to ask for clarification and learned the truth: both pension and social security checks were sent to Sandpiper Crossing. The nursing home deducted various fees and expenses first, then gave the remaining amount to the elderly in cash. Jimmy sensed something fishy, and after reviewing the fee list Mrs. Landry provided, he was certain the nursing home was inflating prices to overcharge the residents.

Jimmy gathered Mrs. Landry and a few of her friends, explaining the problems he’d found in the fee lists. His actions immediately caught the nursing home’s attention. The next day, the staff barred Jimmy from entering, claiming he was “disturbing the elderly’s normal lives.” While Jimmy was at the front desk, he heard the sound of a shredder coming from the office behind—he knew they must be destroying evidence. In a rush, he made an excuse to use the bathroom, then sat on the toilet and quickly wrote a legal letter, demanding the nursing home immediately stop any evidence-destroying behavior. The nursing home’s response was clear: they ordered security to throw Jimmy out.

Chuck was shocked when he heard about this. Over the past two days, while helping Jimmy draft wills, he had also handled draft wills for other Sandpiper residents—but he hadn’t noticed any issues in the fee lists. If they could gather enough elderly clients and figure out the nursing home’s operational process, they could file a class-action lawsuit—a high-profile case that would attract attention. Chuck’s words reignited Jimmy’s determination; he wouldn’t back down just because of a few security guards. That night, he waited outside Sandpiper Crossing. After the staff left work, he snuck into the adjacent garbage area and pulled out bag after bag of “evidence”—documents shredded into thin strips, reeking of garbage.

Jimmy’s small office had no space to work on this, so he had to work through the night at Chuck’s house, piecing the shredded paper back together. But after an entire night, he’d only reassembled half a page. Exhausted, Jimmy lay on the floor and fell asleep. When Chuck woke up early in the morning, he didn’t wake Jimmy. Instead, he tucked a pillow under Jimmy’s head and continued piecing together the evidence. By the time Jimmy woke up, Chuck had reassembled four or five pages—including a key piece of evidence proving that Sandpiper Crossing in New Mexico was also illegally purchasing medical supplies across state lines.

With evidence in hand and Chuck’s support, Jimmy felt confident enough to send an official legal letter to Rich, Sandpiper’s corporate attorney. Thanks to Chuck McGill’s prestigious reputation in the legal industry, Rich didn’t dare ignore Jimmy’s letter this time. That same day, Rich arrived with two associate attorneys to meet Chuck and negotiate a settlement. They left all their electronic devices in the car before entering the house and sitting at the table. When they saw Chuck come out of the inner room, the three stood up in respect. After a brief round of introductions, Rich took the initiative to offer compensation for the elderly residents’ losses. He repeatedly emphasized that Sandpiper was a national chain with twelve five-star nursing facilities, and the overcharges were merely “administrative errors.” They had calculated the total overcharged amount to be just over $46,000, and Sandpiper was willing to pay $100,000 to settle the matter.

Jimmy’s focus was still on the overcharging and illegal transactions. He thought if he negotiated a bit more, getting the compensation up to $150,000 or $200,000, he’d be satisfied. But the seasoned Chuck had spotted a far bigger issue in their conversation. Before Jimmy could speak, Chuck opened his mouth and demanded $20 million in compensation. Not only was Rich shocked—Jimmy, standing beside him, was also caught off guard.

Since mediation failed, they had no choice but to meet in court. After Rich and his team left, Chuck shared his thinking: a large company like Sandpiper had twelve branches across the country. If they could gather enough clients, they could launch a massive nationwide class-action lawsuit, suing Sandpiper for criminal fraud. Chuck believed their top priority now was to find a way to lift the restraining order against Jimmy—only then could Jimmy enter Sandpiper Crossing and recruit more plaintiffs. As Chuck spoke, his face was flushed and his eyes sparkled, all the previous listlessness gone. Looking at his brother, Jimmy felt like he was seeing the brilliant, capable Chuck of the past again.

Chuck had indeed regained his passion for work, throwing himself into it day and night. Jimmy, who was keeping up with him nonstop, was already feeling burnt out. That day, Jimmy returned from the mall. With the restraining order still in place, he could only chase after elderly residents who were out wandering the mall or streets, explaining the losses they had suffered. He had a few more retainer agreements in hand, but he was so tired he collapsed onto the sofa, unable to get up. There were still hundreds of pages of case laws and statutes that Kim had helped print out in the trunk of his car—but he didn’t even have the strength to go get them. Chuck, meanwhile, was flipping through some documents in his hand as he walked toward the door. He opened the door casually, walked to the car, and lifted the box of documents from the trunk—his movements free of any hesitation or fear. It wasn’t until Jimmy, shocked, called out to him from behind that Chuck realized he was actually standing outside.
