It was Shaun’s first official day at work. He got up very early and followed the schedule he had planned out step by step. However, plans often fall apart— the bus was delayed, and in the end, Shaun was five minutes late. When he rushed to Mitchell’s hospital room, Dr. Melendez had already started the routine check-up with Dr. Brown and the others. Shaun tried to make up for his lateness by analyzing Mitchell’s condition, but Melendez was not impressed with him.

Shortly after, a nurse called Melendez and the team to the emergency room for a consultation. There was a female patient named Willis who had a tumor and hoped Melendez would perform her surgery. After looking at the scans, Shaun bluntly stated that Willis had a malignant tumor and there was no way to treat it. Upon hearing this, Willis became extremely worried. Seeing this, Melendez pulled Shaun out of the room and reminded him to pay more attention to patients’ emotions in the future.

This incident also made Melendez aware of Shaun’s shortcomings. So, he assigned Shaun to help in the emergency department, handling trivial tasks to give him some practice. With his straightforward thinking, Shaun did not object; he followed the arrangement and went to assist in the emergency room. Dr. Aaron, who happened to pass by the emergency room, noticed Shaun. After asking about the situation and learning that Melendez was behind the assignment, Aaron left, deep in thought.

While making his rounds, Shaun noticed something unusual about a young girl with stomach discomfort. He decided to arrange for the girl to undergo various hormone tests. When Melendez heard about this, he rushed over and said Shaun was making a mountain out of a molehill—but Shaun disagreed. To stop Shaun from acting on his own, Melendez ordered him to follow the nurse’s instructions and not make decisions without authorization. He even lectured Shaun in a sarcastic tone, but Shaun did not understand the meaning of "sarcasm."

Shaun ran into Brown in the hallway and asked him to explain what "sarcasm" meant. After Brown’s explanation, Shaun recalled a memory from his childhood with his younger brother. Back then, his brother had taken him to live on their own. To earn a living, they often had to lie and deceive others. Though it was wrong, his brother had no choice but to do so, forced by the hardships of life.

Melendez decided to perform tumor resection surgery on Willis. Before the operation, Brown tried to persuade Willis to sign the consent form, but Willis’ son was about to have a wedding, and she hoped to wait until after the wedding to have the surgery. However, time was not on their side. To get Willis to undergo the surgery as soon as possible, Brown lied to her, saying the operation would definitely be successful. In the end, Willis signed the consent form.

During the surgery, Brown discovered that the tumor in Willis’ body was much larger than what the scan had shown—it even blocked the surgical field of view, making it impossible for her to remove the tumor. At this point, Melendez had someone call Shaun to the operating room. Shaun thought Melendez was going to let him participate in the surgery, but instead, Melendez asked him to rush the pathology report for the tissue sample. Disappointed, Shaun went to the lab, but the doctor there ignored him and sternly told him to wait aside. It was then that Shaun remembered his brother’s advice from childhood: never back down from things. So, Shaun mustered up the courage to urge the lab doctor again to hand over the results as soon as possible. In the end, Shaun obtained the test results and delivered them to Melendez.

Faced with the results, Melendez had to return to his office to rethink the surgical plan. Meanwhile, outside the operating room, Shaun reviewed the scans and proposed removing one of Willis’ healthy kidneys—this would allow a clear view of the tumor and make its removal possible. Brown and Willis were both shocked when they heard this, but Willis thought the idea was good and brought it up to Melendez. Melendez accepted Shaun’s suggestion, and Willis was finally saved.
After a full day of doing odd jobs, Shaun had encountered all kinds of patients. From these experiences, he realized that some things cannot be compromised—one must stick to one’s principles. So, Shaun decided to take the vomit sample of the young girl with a stomachache to the lab for testing. The results confirmed that there was indeed something wrong with the girl. Shaun made up his mind to go to the girl’s house that night for a further diagnosis. However, the girl’s parents thought Shaun was being unreasonable and refused to let him in. After Shaun insisted repeatedly, the girl’s father relented. When they entered the girl’s room, they found she had fallen into a coma.
Seeing this, Shaun quickly asked the girl’s father to drive them to the hospital. After an ultrasound scan, Shaun firmly proposed performing surgery on the girl. A nurse beside him tried to stop him, but Shaun ignored the nurse and stuck to his judgment. In the end, thanks to Shaun’s efforts, the girl was saved. And because of this incident, Shaun was transferred back to the surgical department. He felt proud of his courage. Late at night, he held the small toy knife his brother had given him and fell into a peaceful sleep.
