As Colonel Carrillo methodically implemented his plan and achieved results, the video interview with David aired—but both the Colombian government and the United States remained indifferent. This made Escobar increasingly agitated and plagued by nightmares. In the end, Escobar decided to write a letter detailing how much of a bastard Colonel Carrillo was and submit it to the most influential newspaper, but it was not published.

Colonel Carrillo raided another of Judy’s laboratories that Escobar had seized. The stronghold of Ricardo, a fence-sitter, was surrounded by police, and only Ricardo managed to escape. As Colonel Carrillo continued to make progress in suppressing Escobar’s forces, the Cali Cartel began preparing to take over the market once Escobar was gone—and planned to eventually hand Judy over to Escobar.

Escobar’s empire seemed on the verge of collapse, and to make matters worse, he had offended the right-wing Castano by funding guerrillas, who also joined the alliance against Escobar. Castano proposed an alliance with the Cali Cartel to fight Escobar, but was rejected by Barcha.

Limón found Marisa and told her he was willing to betray Escobar with her. For their safety, as Escobar’s driver, Limón could pass Escobar’s whereabouts to Marisa, who would then inform the detectives.

Through Detective Peña’s lover, Marisa told Peña about the plan, and Peña passed it on to Colonel Carrillo. Colonel Carrillo trusted Peña, and after confirming Escobar’s exact address via radio, he set out to arrest him. Murphy and Peña, who wanted to go along, were stopped by Messina.

Little did they know, this was a trap Limón had devised to ensure Marisa’s safety. The arriving Colonel Carrillo walked right into Escobar’s scheme and was shot and killed by Escobar. Peña was overwhelmed with guilt upon learning of Colonel Carrillo’s death. Meanwhile, Vice President Edward received a subpoena from Attorney General Grieve to testify about how Escobar had escaped from the cathedral despite being surrounded by 400 men.

After killing Colonel Carrillo, Escobar celebrated with his wife Tata, who finally let go of her worries. Colonel Carrillo’s death ensured Marisa’s safety—exactly what Limón had wanted. The loss of Colonel Carrillo hit Murphy hard; the orderly progress came to an abrupt halt, and Murphy broke down crying in his wife Connie’s arms. At the same time, the equally distraught Peña was picked up by Bernardo and taken to the Monty Casino.

Colonel Carrillo’s killing sparked controversy, and Vice President Edward volunteered to be the scapegoat for the incident to protect the president’s reputation. Learning that Escobar had personally killed Colonel Carrillo, the Cali Cartel reconsidered forming an alliance with Castano.
