After Walter and Jesse escape, Walter contemplates what to do with his car in the desert. Just then, Gus arrives in his vehicle. Walter agrees to keep working for Gus on the condition that Gus forgives Jesse.

Walter returns to the lab and discovers that Gus has hired Gale as his new assistant. Gus sends men to continue tracking Jesse, while Walter resumes work in the lab—with Gus’s men monitoring both of them.

Walter realizes Gale is Gus’s plant to replace him. Once Gale masters his techniques, Walter will no longer be useful. Gus meets with Gale, telling him Walter cooks meth because he has lung cancer and doesn’t have much time left. Gus advises Gale to learn all of Walter’s skills so he can take over once Walter is gone.

Mike tracks down Saul and asks if he knows Jesse’s whereabouts. He finds Jesse’s address on Saul’s desk. Walter tells Saul he’s decided to launder money through a car wash. Saul takes him to a shop, where Jesse has been hiding. Jesse and Walter discuss their options; Jesse suggests they go on the run together, but Walter refuses to abandon his family.

Walter realizes the only way to survive is to kill Gale. He asks Jesse to do it, but Jesse refuses. Walter orders Jesse to follow Gale and get his home address so Walter can handle it himself.

Walter is taking care of his children at home when Gus’s men show up at the door and take him away. Walter knows Gus has uncovered his plan. He claims he’ll hand over Jesse in exchange for his own life. As Walter calls Jesse, he seizes the chance to urge Jesse to kill Gale.

Jesse knocks on Gale’s door, enters, and shoots him immediately. Gus’s men rush to Gale’s house right after.
