Inside No. 9: Boo to a Goose (2024) - A Recap

The anthology series Inside No. 9 returns for its ninth and final season with a bang in "Boo to a Goose," an episode that takes a dark and suspenseful turn on a seemingly mundane train journey.

The episode opens with a group of strangers boarding a late-night train home. There's the uptight schoolteacher Raymond (Mark Bonnar), the flamboyant drag queen Wilma (Steve Pemberton), the timid nurse Elena (Susan Wokoma), the eccentric businessman Harold (Matthew Kelly), the rebellious student Finn (Joel Fry), and the homeless man Mossy (Charlie Cooper).

As the train rattles through the night, an unexpected power cut plunges the carriage into darkness. In the ensuing chaos, Elena's purse is snatched, and suspicion immediately falls upon Mossy.

Raymond, ever the self-appointed leader, takes it upon himself to search Mossy, much to the protest of the other passengers. Tensions rise as the group becomes divided, with some siding with Raymond's authoritarian approach and others defending Mossy's innocence.

Amidst the growing animosity, a mysterious figure in a hooded cloak emerges from the shadows. This enigmatic stranger, played by Reece Shearsmith, seems to relish the unfolding drama, subtly manipulating the situation to his own ends.

As the train finally grinds to a halt, the passengers realize they are trapped. With no way to escape, they are forced to confront their deepest fears and prejudices.

The claustrophobic atmosphere intensifies as the group's true natures are revealed. Raymond's domineering personality masks a deep-seated insecurity, while Wilma's flamboyant exterior hides a hidden vulnerability. Elena's timid demeanor gives way to a surprising strength, while Finn's rebellious streak reveals a darker side.

And Mossy, the seemingly harmless homeless man, turns out to be far more than he seems. In a shocking twist, it is revealed that Mossy is part of a covert organization that has been observing the passengers, testing their compliance and willingness to conform.

Those who have shown signs of dissent, such as Mossy, Elena, and Finn, are deemed "unsuitable" and are eliminated. The remaining passengers, having demonstrated their obedience, are left to continue their journey, unaware of the sinister events that have transpired.

As the train departs, leaving the bodies of the dissenters behind, the hooded figure lets out a chilling laugh, a haunting reminder of the unseen forces that control our lives.

"Boo to a Goose" is a masterfully crafted episode of Inside No. 9 that delves into the depths of human nature, exploring themes of conformity, rebellion, and the dangers of unchecked authority. With its sharp writing, stellar performances, and signature blend of dark humor and suspense, the episode is a fitting conclusion to the critically acclaimed series.
