Lincoln and Michael used their work assignment to discuss the progress of the digging. Michael decided to test whether his roommate, Sucre, could keep a secret. Sucre, who spent his days longing for his girlfriend Maricruz, saw Michael hide a cell phone. However, under threat from Corrections Officer Bellick, he revealed Michael's secret. It turned out the phone was just a model carved from soap. A furious Sucre was moved to another cell, and "Haywire," an inmate with mental illness, became Michael's new roommate.
Preoccupied with the investigation, Veronica repeatedly turned down marriage proposals from her fiancé, Sebastian, leading to their eventual breakup. The only lead in the murder case, Randy Card, was kidnapped and shot dead. Veronica realized she was up against formidable opposition.
Abruzzi changed his tactics and dealt with "T-Bag," who was seeking revenge. Abruzzi pressed Michael for when he would get the witness's whereabouts. Michael replied, "When we escape, you get me a plane, and I'll get you Fibonacci."
Under the cover of night, Michael began digging, but he was horrified to find "Haywire" watching him. "Haywire" calmly stated that due to permanent nerve damage, he never sleeps.
