Marian refused help when shopping at the supermarket. On her way home, her car got stuck, and she had no choice but to accept Gene’s assistance—she was truly afraid of troubling others around her. When Jeff returned home and saw his mother chatting happily with Gene, he had to sit down as his mother asked and listen to how they met. Marian told Jeff that Gene would stay for dinner. When Gene was about to leave that night, Jeff asked him what was really going on. Gene replied, "You don’t have to call me dad yet—I don’t even know what this is myself." He then asked Jeff if he wanted to join the game he’d been watching his whole life, a life where he wouldn’t have to live like this anymore, with access to luxury cars and women.
Gene carried a bag of items to a door and knocked. After someone inside opened it, Gene said he’d come to apologize and handed over the food he’d brought. The two soon started eating together. Gene checked his watch, left, and even waved deliberately at the camera.
Gene did the same thing every day: delivering desserts at the same time and leaving promptly as scheduled. He marked numbers on the shelves and calculated every step precisely. Gene had made meticulous plans beforehand—one wrong move would land him in prison, so there was no room for error in this operation.
When the supermarket manager saw the dirty floor, he immediately called staff to clean it up. He then received a call informing him that the sender couldn’t pick up the goods before the store closed, so they negotiated to have them removed by tomorrow morning. Gene agreed. As usual, Gene went to the monitoring center to deliver food and chat with the staff. On this day, he finally made his move—sending a message to his accomplice to break into the store and steal.
Gene watched Jeff stealing merchandise from the monitors while calmly talking about the previous day’s game with Frank. When he saw a problem arise on the screen, Gene deliberately told Frank, "I have no family. If I died tonight, no one would care. I don’t know what’s the point of living like this." He also thanked Frank for listening to him ramble.
As soon as Jeff finished stealing, Gene left immediately. The next day, when the manager opened the store, Jeff mixed in with the customers to check the value of the stolen goods. He was thrilled—these items were really valuable—but Gene didn’t share his excitement. "If we sell these and get caught, it’s enough for ten years in prison," he said.
Gene told Jeff, "Now we’re even." Just then, Marian suddenly came to see Gene, so he had to tell Jeff, "I’ll help you check next time." Marian said that since Gene appeared, he’d had a positive influence on Jeff. Gene observed the supermarket and found nothing out of the ordinary.
