A horde of walkers attacked the camp, and many members were killed in the chaos. Andrea’s younger sister Amy was also bitten by a walker—being bitten by a walker meant certain death. Though Andrea knew Amy could never be resurrected, she still stayed by Amy’s side and refused to leave her throughout the night.

As dawn broke, Andrea remained seated where she was, still unwilling to leave Amy. The other members discussed how to persuade her. Daryl suggested shooting Amy in the head with an arrow to put her out of her misery, while Rick wanted to convince Andrea to accept Amy’s death. However, Andrea raised a handgun and pointed it at Rick, forcing him to turn around and leave, not daring to disturb her any further.

The walker attack on the camp had claimed many lives, so everyone joined forces to carry away the bodies. Dale sat down beside Amy to comfort Andrea, and the two talked about Amy’s life.

Jim had been bitten during the walker attack on the camp. After a discussion, the group decided to take him to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Shortly after Amy’s death, her eyes slowly opened. Andrea noticed Amy’s gaze was empty and vacant—Amy had turned into a mindless walker. Heartbroken, Andrea spoke to Amy, but Amy lifted her wrist, trying to attack her. The other members stood nearby, anxious and on edge, watching as Andrea shot Amy to end her suffering.

The camp had fallen and was no longer fit for living, so everyone packed their luggage and got in cars to head to the CDC. Jim went with them. As the cars traveled and reached the edge of a forest, Jim realized his time was running out and refused to continue onward with the group. Respecting his wish, the others stopped the cars and helped Jim to the side of the road.

Rick wanted to give Jim a handgun for self-defense, but Jim thought it was unnecessary since he was going to die soon. Rick had no choice but to turn away and let the other members say goodbye to Jim. Everyone bid Jim a reluctant farewell before returning to the cars.

The CDC had already fallen. A single staff member stayed there, talking to himself every day while staring at the empty monitoring equipment. Rick and his companions arrived by car outside the CDC’s main gate—the closed gate stood cold and lifeless, blocking their way. Rick, overcome with emotion, insisted that there must still be people inside, but the others believed the CDC had fallen and no one was left alive.

Just as the group turned around to leave, the CDC gate suddenly opened, and a burst of bright white light poured out from inside. Everyone was shocked, turning back to stare at the now-open gate.
